you're not supposed to piss in the washing machine

Mando Pandango

it smells fine out of the washer. it's something about the heat of the dryer that makes it smell just a little bit like piss

There are a couple things you can try. Personally, I suspect that the washer is the issue. Either it's not rinsing properly, the washer needs cleaned, you're using too much detergent, not hot enough water or your water has a lot of minerals in it.

Check the washer first. Look around the inside using a flashlight if you need to. Look for mold, debris, take some mild bleach water and a sponge and wipe down all gaskets and seals thoroughly. Now get some old towels or something you don't care about. Toss those in the washer and put dishwasher detergent (yes, the stuff you use in a dishwasher!) in. The same about you would use to do a load in the dishwasher, about 2 tablespoons. Cheap is fine. Set the wash temp to hot and select the longest cycle. The dishwasher detergent will dissolve or get rid of mold, water deposits and product build up which can all cause odor issues. I do this once a month since our area has a lot of minerals in the water.

Now on to the smelly clothes. You have a couple of choices here. If you have white vinegar, add 1 cup to a wash load with your regular laundry detergent. OR you can get washing soda (similar to baking soda but made for laundry) and add 1/2 c. per load. Either works great on smells, the white vinegar helps get rid of the dingy cast to whites and light colors left from minerals in the water. Just don't do both at the same time! Remember how vinegar and baking soda foam??? Just add either with your normal amount of detergent and fabric softener.

In most cases, sour smells in laundry come from the washer. My appliance guy recommends using the dishwasher detergent once a month to keep the washer clean and the filters cleaned out so you don't get into an odor problem. And it does help to leave the washer door open a crack when it's not in use to allow air to circulate in the machine. This helps stop mold and mildew from growing.
