No tipping and a higher base wage

Seems to be a trendy idea at least in Wa. Eliminate tips, raise prices on certain items, and pay a higher hourly wage. My company is going to change to a base pay system on May 1st

I make anywhere from $15-$24/hr with tips, and with the new system I'll be starting with $17/hr, and will eventually be making $20 once I am fully certified in espresso and manual brew methods. I think it's good overall for simplicities sake but I do worry about customer reactions. However I have heard positive things from other companies who have rolled out a similar system.

I would love this because I find myself ignored by waitstaff who think I won't tip well because I look young. So then I have to either tip mediocrely, confirming their bias, or tip them well for doing a shitty job.

So pls no more tips. It would also be good for my gf who seems to more often than not get tipped poorly

Yeah it is honestly an unnecessary component of the service industry. I guess maybe it's the same as a sales commission, but way less objective

im down 4 this, i hate tipping as a concept (though i'm not some edge lord who doesn't tip TO MAKE A STATEMENT; i still tip). would allow me to disregard tipping when i receive mediocre service, which is most times i go somewhere, and reserve the tips for the times i receive excellent service, which i do every now and again

i've heard this is bad for bartenders tbf as most place cant feasibly pay them enough to keep up with their typical tip wages. bartenders usually make like 30-40/hr on tips from what ive heard from my tendy homies

Hm it is probably hit or miss. I've talked to bar tenders at a couple places in Seattle that do this and they seem to prefer it. It ultimately depends on if the customers are on board to pay higher base prices and if the new wage is comparable to what they were making with tips

obviously if the pay is equal you would go with guarantee per hour. but it is hard to compare because some nights you might get a crazy tip that doubles your normal earnings. and with base pay you never have this variation. and it induces a structure of rigidity and predetermination or regimental operating. for example you come in and can work only a certain amount of hours on a certain time frame, because no one is going to pay you 30 dollars an hour to work the dead hours and you or someone else works the busy hours.

plus the natural excitement and high from getting a big tip when you don't expect it. or converstly a shitty wtf one when you don't deserve it. it definitely at the same time it eliminates server care or attention level in the sense that the main wage is not so directly dependent on the customer, it also frees up thr customer from the dilemma of the tip and leaving extra money etc.

but it definitely washes down the type of person serving requires, and approach. and also removes power from the customer to influence the server and their situation. the only plus i see is higher base wages. and this is a must anyway with keeping the normal tips compensation on top, not an either or. maybe i could see a higher base pay but the standard tipping is 5-10% instead of 15-20% ect.

either waythe profits and margins are there on the serving industry owners and business to eat for sure.
it's disgraceful that serving has been regulated as this informal ad hock step child of former business or employment and you get these micky mouse indentured servant rule and laws that are way outdated and unfair, scratch that, harmful and predatory. it is 2017, everything should be codified and empirically regulated. it is time for an update and modernization.
