i think laser printers don't last as long as other printers but are higher quality? Either way u are going to get fucked by ink. Epson makes the best printers. Also their ink used to be the cheapest but looks like brother has cheaper ink.

Laser printers don't use ink in the same way normal printers do. Laser printers last significantly longer than normal printers. I received a laser printer in 2010 and the printer is only now running low on ink. However replacement carts cost something like $70, but I think that is justified.
My printer only prints in black and white, but for documents that's all you need. It is also very fast, the paper simply slides through the tray and within about 2 seconds or so, a page is printed.
I have found laser printers excellent, in my experiences with them.

inkjet printers need to be refilled after every 5 prints

i bought a $40 laser printer 5 years ago and have yet to replace the ink. it works fine.

my family just got a laser printer in May 2012
so far printed 2819 pages with it
I have no idea how my mom is so wasteful with printing

Within two months of getting the printer, she depleted the bundled toner. We replaced the toner then for $24. For this second cartridge, the printer's configuration site says 2 of 10 shaded boxes which probably means somewhere between 15-25%

Laser printers are very much better than inkjet; toner for this new printer lasts longer and is cheaper than ink was for the previous printer we had, while the resulting prints have noticeably much higher quality. The only issue is that the affordable household laser printers can't do color, but the inkjet printer we had before had so many color-related problems that we avoided color printing anyways.

The printer I have, by the way, is Brother HL2270DW (~$80). Before that, we had Dell Inkjet Printer 720
