one of the greatest pleasures in all of gaming is the joy of watching massive endeavors like this slowly come crashing down to earth, menacing grin on one's face all the while

that being said, i guess they plan for it to be a franchise and therefore that makes it worth what would otherwise be an unreasonably large initial investment for any single game, but even then it seems beyond excessive

Yeah I think in those leaked contracts from a few years ago they said a new game every two years. I think with a DLC expansion pack in the year in between each game.

But things may have changed by now.
