Okay so I want to start watching a little more anime
Right now I'm downloading Kaiji and Welcome to the NHK because I've heard great things about them.
I've also heard they're both kinda sad so I want a more upbeat one to watch along with those
you can look at my MAL thingy to see things I want to watch: http://myanimelist.net/profile/hrio3
I want to watch Paranoia Agent a lot too but that's not an upbeat show at all. How about BECK then? ANy other suggestions?

Samus Aran

BECK is a must-watch for anyone interested in a story about a rock band, cause that's exactly what it is. the story of some kids forming a band. it's quite simplistic, but it's just fantastic. it's neither too "upbeat" nor too "sad" at all.

another one i think you would really appreciate is Baccano!, a crazy crime drama with some supernatural elements and a nonlinear storytelling approach. it also needs to be watched dubbed, btw. dub has much more life and energy than the original version.

i can also see you appreciating Bakemonogatari. it's a really interesting show that is visually quite amazing (SHAFT studio seems to make this their primary focus often). basically, it's about this boy who attempts to help different girls with their supernatural problems. it's broken up into story arcs, one for each girl/problem. it's a truly strange show, but i think it's brilliantly written. a great deal of it is simply talking, but the dialogue is so well-written that it holds up. it's perpetually interesting, i think.

Hiro

well I just mean something a little less serious and dark, something a little more positive to counter the depressing shows. Anyways, I guess I'll start downloading BECK as well.
I remember you telling me about Baccano, it seems pretty interesting. So I'll watch that and Bakemonogatari or maybe Paranoia Agent after I finish the shows I have right now.

Samus Aran

well i would say neither of the shows i recommended is particularly positive, but Baccano has a weird way of sort of making light of the hyperviolence that's in it and it's still got plenty of comedic moments, and Bakemonogatari, while its themes are kind of dark sometimes, has tons of comedy actually, and also makes light of serious things too.

they're both well-balanced, i think.

i was going to recommend Haruhi as a lighter show, but i'm not sure if that would really be your thing, idk. don't play it off as just another school comedy though, cause it's not...it's much too well-written for that...idk, you could give it a try. i adore it.

Angel Beats! is an interesting and mostly upbeat (but with its share of drama too, especially the ending) show that's a very different sort of "school comedy," in which school is basically purgatory and the "students" are always trying to find weird ways to combat moving into the afterlife, and fighting against "Angel," who wants them to act like "normal students" to "disappear" (if you act like a normal student, you'll supposedly move out of purgatory, and they want to instead perpetuate and keep "living")

Well I've watched little clips of Haruhi many times and I just watched a full episode tonight on the stream and I just found everyone kind of obnoxious

Angel Beats sounds interesting enough.

Haruhi herself is obnoxious, she's the definition of tsundere, she actually adores Kyon but just won't admit it.

idk i just love the show >.<

idk maybe i'll watch a few more streams when it's on but my expectations for it aren't too high from my previous experience

Madoka is far from upbeat, which is why i didn't mention it goowan

it's fantastic though and a must-watch

Trigun is sort of a classic that's a must-watch as well, and it's mostly pretty upbeat - it gets much more serious about halfway through though

lol ahhh there's so much to recommend

Nyerp

hiro just shut up and start watching things and go from there

I haven't even posted in this thread since last night goonish
and besides, I wasn't just asking for anime suggestions as a whole but rather just what I should start with and more specifically for one good show to counter the supposedly sad ones i have right now
but anyways I got BECK
