I usually see it called 10-bit h.264, not hi10p
It's a video encoding standard that gives significantly lower filesizes, but requires using a media player that updates often and is up-to-date. mplayer2 works perfectly fine and I imagine the most recent CCCP for Windows should handle it by now too.

Because PS3 hasn't updated its video player since probably its original launch, that media player really is pretty outdated.

I think PS3 doesn't support MKV subtitles anyways, so losing compatibility with it at this point is negligible except for people who like watching raw
