I don't really get blues. I mean, I get that there's a lot of emotion involved and it can be a very passionate and personal medium, but the usual musical structure behind blues kind of bores me.

Electric blues can be cool every once in a while though, I guess.

I'm on the other side of the spectrum. I feel that electric blues kind of strips the soul of the blues, clouding the emotions of the thing.

It's why I don't really care for Stevie Ray Vaughn, unless I've completely misunderstood what electric blues is.

unless your talking about muddy waters or whatever then yeah that electric blues is pretty good

idk if this counts but nearly everything I have ever heard off of blue note records was really great. It is like bluesy jazz? Or Jazzy Blues???

I love the blues. And as far as the electric vs. acoustic blues argument goes, I will say that electric often does muck up the blues a bit too much and takes away the emotion, but it does allow for blues to be easily incorporated into rock, and I have always thought that certain artists like Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton did a fine, fine job of carrying blues over into hard rock while staying true to the blues. Tunes like Zep's "Since I've Been Loving You" or "You Shook Me" are personal favorites of mine. Also a huge fan of The Black Keys' raw, low-fi blues rock from before they signed onto a major label. And of course there's plenty of artists that played very "pure" blues, but just happened to play it on an electric guitar or modernize it a bit, like B.B. King, Otis Rush, John Lee Hooker, etc.

Favorite, though? I think I have to give it to John Lee Hooker. To me, Hooker completely immortalizes the blues. Sure, the groundworks were laid by different people, and Hooker might not be some acoustic purist or something silly like that, but I dunno man, I just think he captures everything that the blues is perfectly while still keeping it entertaining. And he certainly did modernize it sometimes. But I kinda prefer the rawer recordings. Like the one of "Boom Boom" I chose below instead of the full band version that is more popular. And in general I find the live recordings more interesting, too.

i've always been more comfortable calling him a jazz guitarist, but the blues is definitely in there somewhere, so whatever
