I love emo styles. The hair, the skinny jeans, etc. I have tons of friends who dress themselves like that. And let me tell you, none of them would ever even think of hurting themselves. One of them actually has the biggest fear of veins and blood that I've ever heard of. And of the guys, yeah, most of them are gay. It's not exactly the most masculine style around, I don't blame straight guys for wanting to stay away from it. Doesn't mean all of the guys are gay though.

Oh, and if you're gonna go around hating "emos" then you might as well go around hating "scenesters" too, since nobody seems to know the difference anymore.
