The State of the Next Generation

The next gen oration seems to have flaws in every console, so I wish to point them out. Before you read this please leave your fanboy-ness behind, think about this topics I bring up before jumping ahead and defending your console of choice. I've played all three consoles and think that they all have their advantages, but that isn't what I'm here to point out. Grab some food and enjoy my post.

Wii

The Wii has great great great sales but still needs major work. How can I explain this? People wanted something new! Nintendo hasn't done much but give you a new controller and make the console more appealing to the eye. They've put a little more power into it but not much. If people didn't want something new, the Gamecube would have sold so much better then it did. The main problems I see with the current state of the Wii is graphics, online play, lack of memory, lack of media, and lack of organization.

1. Graphics, they're not that great, nothing compared to the Playstation 3 or xbox 360, although some people would rather have the console cost less, the games cost less, and more interactivity with the innovative controllers. Not something Nintendo can fix now though, just put out better looking games is their only option if they would like to make the graphics look better.

2. Online play, why Nintendo is barley stepping their foot in the online multi-player door with their friend code system, which is horrible! They also put in Wii Numbers into the Wii, so if you want to play with someone you'll have to have their friend code and Wii number. Voice chat is only available with people you've added into your friend list too. They can't do much to change this though, but I wish they could. This doesn't attract the more hard core gamers at all, If Nintendo doesn't leap into the online experience by next generation, they'll suffer really badly.

3. Memory, how can they think that people will be fine with 512 mbs? I'm sure if you've been downloading N64 games you've probably filled up your internal memory by now. Nintendo should make the Wii DVD available with more memory, I'm sure people will re-buy a Wii if they make the Wii DVDs with 10gbs. I know I would defiantly think about it.

4. Lack of media, sure it is a video game console, and I defiantly didn't complain when I heard there isn't a DVD player in the first model of the Wii, but some did. They've already planned to fix this with the Wii DVD. I think they should look into making an add-on for HD-DVD or Blu Ray much like the 360 did, but of course only if it would be marketable for Nintendo. Where is my download-able content?

5. Organization, why they made all the Virtual console games into individual channels I will never know, they should look at 360 and PS3 and take some notes, both 360 and PS3 are organized beautifully. They've also had little things like you're not able to export images edited in the Mario Paint like picture editor to a computer.

Xbox 360

Now, the 360 sole purpose is to play first person shooters and play them online. I love my 360 so far, and hope that I can soon get online play. The console needs no work for the hard core first person shooter fan, but those who aren't into those types of games probably won't buy the console. They lack family games, the console over heats, and they lack a variety in games.

1. Family games, sure the 360 is supposed to be made for the hard core gamer, the controller is modeled perfectly and 50% of all of the games are shooters, but they don't realize that the Wii is making tons of sales because of the more family friendly games. Maybe they don't have Pokemon or Mario but they sure should try and make some new franchises that are more family friendly. Viva Piñata, though I've never played it, I've heard for everyone whose played it that it is a good game. The game was marketed horribly! It didn't appeal to many people because it look childish to teens and over, and it looked stupid and too adult-like to children. Maybe they should look at Pikmin and Pokemon and go from there.

2. Overheating, they've got to fix this, I just bought a 360 and as soon as I can I am going to buy an external cooler for my 360. Mine is extremely hot to the touch after four hours of game-play. They shouldn't have put the vent on the bottom of the console (When turned vertically), if you don't have one, if you turn it vertically it blocks a vent. Good idea Microsoft.

3. Lack of variety in games, most all 360 games are shooters or are 3rd party games that are on all three consoles. Most people aren't complaining because anyone who bought the console knows this, and anyone who isn't going to buy one, is for this reason.

Playstation 3

Everyone seems the Playstation 3 as a console that'll soon die off. Sony has made very bad decisions with the console so far, it is way way way too early to put Blu Ray into a console! DVD players didn't take over VHS tapes reign on the media format until eight years after they were released, what makes Sony think that people will buy a Blu Ray player so soon in its existence? If a game needs more then 8gbs, they can either double layer the DVDs or just use multiple disks. If they waited til next generation with the Blue Ray, they would have done fine. My major issues with the PS3 is the price, it is too hard to develop for, and it has a bad reputation already.

1. Price, I'm not exactly ratting on the price but no one is going to buy a $599 console when the only game that looks even half appealing is Resistance: Fall of man. If they develop some games that are worthwhile, they'll sell more console, even without a price drop. I'm willing to spend $599 on a console if it is reliable and has good games, which as of now, as far as I know the PS3 isn't reliable and doesn't have any good games. It is too early for Blu Ray.

2. Hard to develop for, now I don't know first hand but this is what I've heard. They're going to have a lack of games if people find it hard to develop games for the console.

3. Bad reputation, they're put themselves in a hole after switching the controller to the banana looking controller, then switching back, then "ripping off" the Wii with Sony's six axis controller. Then they did it again after canceling all production of the $499 version of the PS3. This is what helped Sega go down the toilet, Sega got a bad reputation after creating the Sega CD, 32X, and Sega Saturn all within the same time span. People saw Sega struggling when they kept changing things with their consoles. Also Spider Man font.



Overview

All of the next generation consoles need work, but sadly we'll never see all of my concerns disappear, at least not until next next generation. I've played all three of them, own a 360 and Wii, and used to own a PS3 for a month. I try not to be bias but it happens. I think the PS3 needs the most work to become a sell-able console and the Wii needs major work in my opinion. I also think that Wii sales will jump once more when the Wii DVD is released. Same with the 360 Elite, sorry Sony!

The 360 has a lot going for it, but doesn't sell to the younger video gamers. I think the only thing Sony has going for it is the potential and the really really really shiny case.

That's not my problem.

I'd take the best RPG, Racer, Shooter, Sports game, Puzzler, Minigame compilation, and pretty much every other genre from the 360 then the best one from the Wii.

I don't care if the Wii came out later, that's its fault.
