My dad makes around 100 grand a year, but we live like poor people and are struggling to keep out of debt. :'(

How?  If my dad made twice what he did now we'd be doing great.  The cost of living in CA isn't twice that of MA.

It's mostly because of gas. It can cost anywhere from $3 - 4 a gallon right now, and we live about 23 miles from my school and over 50 from my dad's work. Factor in cars that get around 18 miles a gallon, and the fact that my dad has to drive both ways to work 4 times a week, and my mom to and from my school 10+ times a week, and you've got an assload of cash spent on gas, and that's without considering stuff on the weekends. The rest is wasted on stuff such as fast food, we eat out a lot because we're on the road so much.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a hybrid?

You'd get a cool new car, save money on gas, and get a tax deduction.
