But I only shut it off for a second, that couldn't have been enough time for it to cool down and run smoothly.
Also, I doubt it was overheating, just a few weeks ago I took out every last bit of dust I could find.

My rig cools off quickly.  I got into an intense gaming situation, then get out of the game, and watch my temps plummet in like two seconds.  Although my fan is spinning the whole time, whereas yours wouldn't be if you turned it off.
