Why do people use "gay" as an insult or something? If so, why don't we use "straight" as an insult?

I used to try using the word gay to describe stuff until I was sitting a homosexual in math class.  He forgot something and yelled "FUCKING FAGGOT". I was like " wtc; "

He also described things as being "gay".  It was a bit odd.
