maybe I'm just especially terrible at games when played online in particular, but when I do well in them I don't feel as though much as changed in the way of skill, as with similarly ranked players I will vary wildly in ability. I think lag introduces an unintended gameplay element, and many games are either exploited to hell and back or have so much shit flying around that luck plays too great a role.

Well it probably depends on the game too. Mario Kart or some other party game is going to be random as hell and skill only takes you so far. OW, Counterstrike, LoL, DoTA, Rocket League are less random and more skilled players will consistently defeat less skilled players. If exploits are found in those games they are patched out.

If anyone is playing these games competitively they're unlikely to have poor internet or else yeah there's no point because you'd be so disadvantaged
