So I tried adding themes, and apparently it's not possible to use SMF 2.0.x themes. We're using 2.1 Beta which only has 5 themes available on the marketplace.

I did install 1 dark theme. It's kind of lame but might be a good enough starting point for a custom dark theme.

It edits the PHP files (and sometimes database) to insert the new code, which is why it needs upload and edit permissions.
Depending on the theme I could probably finangle some sort of modification (usually editing the XML and repackaging) to let it work on 2.1 assuming there haven't been any changes that'd make it not work.
also there is a lot more we could be doing to make boyah 2.0 look and feel more familiar aside from themes
for example, many visual elements like message icons and banners remain missing or broken
