my company is really short staffed, busy, etc, and i carry a lot of weight at my store. i'm on really good terms with my coworkers and managers, and it is known that i am leaving in august to go on a trip, potentially for good.
i just finished my 2nd quarter of classes, and my biking trip has kind of fucked my school, since it conflicts with both summer and fall quarters. i've been kind of stressed about losing progress i've made, and have been trying to figure out what to do with my free time until i leave for my trip while i'm just working w/ no school. my dad owns a web-based company, and a while ago i told him that i would love to intern for him for free just to get experience.
we hadn't really talked about it much, and just recently he told me that i could work alongside him full time (white upper middle class privilege ftw) focusing on varying projects in php, sql, html, and css making $15/hr. would be great experience and if i do it before and after my trip for a good amount of time i might be able to land a junior dev position at a startup or something. this is best case scenario for my future, really.
HOWEVER i feel horrible leaving my work. I know how fucked my store would be without me, and because of my company's absurd training program and requirements (i know, not my fault), it would be a real struggle to have another qualified barista in my place. i feel like i'm fucking over my coworkers who are also my close friends, and am burning a reference. i'd submit a 2 week's notice of course, but my company has made it clear that they really like 1 month's notice.
should i say fuck it and feel guilty? or let guilt make me work a job i am sick of for another month and a half and then start interning after my trip in october?
i'm going to put in my 2 week's i think i just want to know if my guilt is justified or if i am being overly sensitive
you'll have to tear the bandaid off eventually, if not now then in a month and a half
and it's not like you're leaving just to spite them lol, i guarantee not a single one of them has any intention of being a barista for life
i think they'll understand if they're reasonable people

i know a few people involved in "coffee culture" and i guarantee you there's at least one or two who fucking love that shit and will die making flowers in latte foam
anyway, yeah fuck em man, i mean if their store can't function without losing a single employee, that's not on you man; that's just kind of bad business management. also a months notice is a fucking pie in the sky desire; two weeks is entirely reasonable.
you gotta do what's good for you. if they aint happy you got a good opportunity, are they really your buddies at all?
Don't feel guilty. Shouldn't any company be smarter than to put themselves in a position like that?

srsly
not your fault if they collapse upon your departure, and delaying it would only be delaying the inevitable
Yeah you guys are totally right. I've only been at this company for a year and a half but it's insane that I won't be here in two and a half weeks. It's been a really good experience overall and I've made a lot of close friends- I think that's the underlying reason why I'm neevous
People get nervous with any life change. I'm sure your friends will understand.
demand a raise then quit anyway

What's funny is that I am scheduled to get a nice lil raise in a couple weeks
Thanks for the replies buds. It actually helps to hear that I'm over thinking it and okay for thinking in my best interest
update:
I put in my 2 weeks and my immediate manager, and director of operations were both very cool with it. the owner of the company, who is from germany where they apparently give 3 months notice (his words lol) was pretty pissy and revoked the raise that i was scheduled to receive. even though i was only going to make the new rate for 3 days, the raise was supposed to be based on performance evaluations and seniority (i had been told that i would get the new rate for the 3 days by my manager and director of operations). being revoked the raise cost me ~$50 because of the PTO that i had saved up. the owners pettiness justified my leaving even more, and he really burned any chance of me wanting to return.
currently working remotely for my dad's company on a webapp that interacts with his database. getting really good experience and his business partner will sign off on a letter of recommendation that my dad will write for me (privilege lmao)
on top of that i leave on my bike tour to cabo in a couple weeks so i can say that things are looking up for me.
Yeah 50 bucks is nothing in the long run so nbd. Congrats on your new life and adventures ahead wrench;

for real
but to be fair my dad is paying me $15/hr which is much less than i was making a barista (would have been at $22.5 if i had gotten the raise)
at the same time, i bet there is much more room for growth and development at your dad's company (or even if not at that particular company, then almost certainly within that field) than you were likely to have had as a barista lol

never give two shits about any company because they don't give two shits about you
