Poll
Question: Should the loss of our current set of themes deter us from moving on to Boyah 2.0?
Option 1: Yes, preserve the current set of themes even it means remaining on Boyah 1.0 for all time votes: 2
Option 2: No, forget the themes, we can always make new ones for Boyah 2.0 votes: 7
Title: Boyah 2.0 Referendum: Themes
Post by: Kalahari Inkantation on June 11, 2018, 08:23:01 AM
Boyah 1.0's themes are incompatible with SMF 2.0. The move to Boyah 2.0 would therefore come at the significant cost of our current set of themes, forcing us to use the SMF 2.0 default options unless/until we have made our own.

Is this issue significant enough to you to warrant the cancellation of Boyah 2.0 entirely?

simple majority decides our next step

Just archive this forum, make it read only, and then make a new boyah where everybody has to register again and start at zero.

Boyah actually hasn't updated its privacy policy yet, but we've been meaning to for ages and a few new constitutional amendments will be ratified Soonâ,,¢. hocuspocus;

the 'transsexuals' thread is good enough evidence for me that we need to burn this place to the fucking ground at some point
Title: Re: Boyah 2.0 Referendum: Themes
Post by: Kalahari Inkantation on June 11, 2018, 11:17:45 AM
to me that thread does a particularly effective job at chronicling how we've changed over the past 11 years

some of the most transphobic users later went on to become transgendered themselves lol

it's a good and useful piece of boyah history that i don't think we can just incinerate out of shame

me2

it sounds like many of us have posts we're quite ashamed of today, the problem is:

1. how exactly do we even find those posts among thousands or even tens of thousands of posts per user

2. deciding what to do with them in case we make it past concern 1

3. deciding what qualifies as reasonable or unreasonable shame, or what posts have historic value regardless of their awfulness, etc.

Initially they were intended to be a word filter to stop having people use them but I eventually realized we can't exactly remove the content now because the words will show up in all the posts where people typed it

i could technically probably script up a way to pull a list of which words users want removed from their history by querying each post

i feel like a project like this would require far more finesse than a word filtering script alone could offer, although a script could certainly be used to facilitate things

I'm all for starting over. I'd love to abandon some of all that past shit, plus it would give us a better idea of where we stand now and who all is left. Plus, 2.0.
Title: Re: Boyah 2.0 Referendum: Themes
Post by: Kalahari Inkantation on June 11, 2018, 03:44:59 PM
i am wholly opposed to starting over from zero, that's just way too dramatic a solution to what's practically a non-problem

there is simply far too much history over the course of boyah's RICH ELEVEN-YEAR EXISTENCE for starting over from scratch now while activity is at its absolute lowest to make any sense

we can brainstorm on strategies to do some spring cleaning in preparation for the move but i will fervently resist any serious campaign to begin anew

you can't throw over 1.5 million babbies out with a thimbleful of bathwater

but maybe that's just me idk

as i've said, i'm ok with tactlessness to a point, so i'm fine with keeping everything in place right now

i actually fear change in this instance. if i could make boyah look exactly the same but function better and load faster, i'd be so happy

Or maybe just move everything old to a read-only archive with every board locked down to existing members like Offline Discussion is

Can Boyah 3.0 just be boyah's very own reddit clone? And that way everybody can just have their own boards and have boards for whatever they want.
