I was about to make an Ace Attorney thread then decided to make this broader one.
There are quite a few notable recent and upcoming releases even among the very few franchises that are popular outside Japan.
Ace Attorney:
* Ace Attorney 6 is releasing June 9 in Japan, sometime later elsewhere
* The Ace Attorney anime started on April 2.
* Dai Gyakuten Saiban / The Great Ace Attorney (the Victorian-era England spinoff with Sherlock Holmes) released in Japan last summer. It will probably never get an official translation, but an eventual fan patch is likely
Danganronpa:
* Danganronpa 1 released on Steam in February (Windows, OS X, and Linux)
* Danganronpa 2 released on Steam on April 18
* Danganronpa V3 is releasing on PS4 and Vita sometime this year (at least in Japan)
* Danganronpa 3 (an anime) is also airing sometime this year
Zero Escape:
* Zero Escape 3: Zero Time Dilemma is releasing in the US for 3DS and Vita on June 28
* Japan will get it on June 30 for 3DS, Vita, and PC
* US will get a Steam release later in 2016
Chase:
* Unrelated but very similar to Hotel Dusk and Last Window and created by many of the same people
* In Japan, releasing Spring 2016 for 3DS. No translation has been announced.
Some recent news:
Ace Attorney 6:
* Maya Fey is back after being absent from the last two main games and all three spinoffs. link (http://nintendoeverything.com/maya-fey-revealed-for-ace-attorney-6/)
* Japan preorder bonus costumes: Furio Tigre for Phoenix, maid outfit for Athena, Ryuunosuke (DGS protag) outfit for Apollo link (http://gematsu.com/2016/03/ace-attorney-6-launches-june-9-japan)
* New trailer

Zero Escape:
* There are portrait images for 8 of the participants, of which at least 3 are returning characters from 999/VLR. link (https://twitter.com/_crash_keys_)
* There are more announcements/trailer/etc coming about a week from now, during the week of GDC
Nekopara 1 & 2 sillydood;
man i gotta beat VLR. 999 was the shit but i didnt want to play/read two VNs back to back so i put VLR down for a while and never came back to it
I do think that 999 was a bit better than vlr, but still amazing.
Can't wait for zero escape 3
yeah after i finish reading brave new world (i'm 24 and its 2016, lol, i know) i might restart VLR as my commute game/book lol, really wanna be ON THE GROUND FLOOR when zero escape 3 drops ya know
I played through the first two Ace Attorney games and part of the third (emulated them and lost my save on the third so I said fuck it). I always thought Zero Escape looked cool.
*shrug*
I fucking love Ace Attorney. Apollo Justice was okay :3

I'll call this the most surprising announcement in quite a while.
Hotel Dusk and Last Window are two games developed by Cing for DS in 2007 and 2010. Cing filed bankruptcy in 2010 only two months after the Japanese release of Last Window. They also made two Trace Memory (aka Another Code) games in 2005 and 2009. I haven't played the unreleased-in-US Another Code sequel yet, but I enjoyed the other three games.
Although the characters visible in this teaser resemble Kyle Hyde and Rachel, they're different people who supposedly act a lot like them. Maybe they wanted to make a Last Window sequel but couldn't get the rights to it?
i need to play the ds ace attorney games but i wish ds games weren't so ugly on the 3ds :(
last and only ace attorney game I played was justice for all, which I really enjoyed but got impossibly stuck on halfway through
always wanted to get more into the series, this new one looks great and I was really digging Great Ace Attorney as well
zero escape always seemed good, and I really wanted trace memory and hotel dusk back when they came out
but there are tons of games i want and no money so we'll see if I ever get any of these

The Ace Attorney Trilogy on 3DS looks nicer, costs less, and even has some fixed text when compared to all three of the original games on DS. Although that Trilogy is also available on iOS and Wii, they're much buggier and it honestly looks worse there because the art wasn't designed to be upscaled that much.
But that's actually only half of the DS Ace Attorney games. Apollo Justice and both Ace Attorney Investigations games are good too and haven't yet been ported anywhere else.

Justice For All has some of the worst cases in the series; only its last (fourth) case is particularly good compared to anything else in the other games. If you stopped only halfway through that game, the rest of the series only goes up from there.

Why don't you have a regular DS?
Like you said, DS games look a lot worse on the 3DS family than they do on DS family.
Out of the three AA games that are still DS-exclusive, Ace Attorney Investigations 2 in particular isn't even obtainable legitimately in English. There's a complete fan translation, but you really can't play that without running the ROM through either an emulator or a flashcart.

wow great job nintendo truly intuitive
it's mostly just me, but I don't really think that DS games look that bad on a 3ds screen.
I play DS games on my *new* 3ds xl and they look just fine to me.
are they a bit more pixelated? yes, but its not a drastic difference

playing DS games on a screen that big is a minor issue (extremely low PPI), but not that bad
The problem with playing DS games on 3DS systems is that the 3DS displays have a different resolution with an awkward scaling factor (125%). Unless you use the Start+Select trick that Tec described (which I didn't even know about until just now), this means DS games should look really blurry.
With bigger pictures, sure, the blurriness from a 125% scale isn't too noticeable, but when you have so few pixels from the start, you definitely lose detail.
Here's a simulated example I just came up with with a DS screenshot I had on-hand:
and this is what it looks like zoomed in such that the detail from each pixel is kept unchanged while both images are the same size:
I might be blind enough to details that I sometimes can't tell whether a picture is 720p or 1080p, I might not even notice sometimes the difference between 30fps and 60fps, but it's really hard for me not to immediately notice and be bothered by this blur when trying to play any DS game on any 3DS without that Start+Select trick to disable all upscaling in exchange for a smaller picture.
I honestly do not notice a thing.
i played that game on ipad :3
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2016/03/16/release-date-and-other-details-for-zero-time-dilemma-revealed.aspx
"The text-heavy visual novel portions of the previous games will not be in Zero Time Dilemma. Instead, cinematic sequences will replace them."
that really could be good or bad for me, depending on things
Zero Time Dilemma also got its first trailer yesterday

It's releasing June 28 in US. Dual-audio support is confirmed.
There's also a new announcement that it'll get a Steam/PC port at a later date (the Steam logo is visible in the Japanese trailer), but not the same day as the Vita/3DS releases. I think it's also been suggested somewhere but not outright confirmed that the first two games are getting ports too.

yeah i'm avoiding everything i can, i didn't even watch the trailer tbh lol. the only thing i've read was the kotaku announcement article, which was spoiler free. or at least i think it was; any character or location mentions i either did not recognize or don't remember. it's been about two years since i beat 999, so i've forgotten most of the character names at this point lol

lmao 5thgrade;
The Ace Attorney anime started airing today.
It's faithful to the games, so far showing all of the first case in the first episode. Episode 2 will be part of case 2.
The animation isn't very good, as expected of A-1 Pictures
The opening and ending aren't very good either
The Japan setting is extremely obvious, more than in the games
Unlike the live-action movie, there's no weirdness like courtroom hologram projections
The voice acting is weird: Phoenix's voice is Eren Jaeger. I expected something much deeper.
Only VN I'm interested in, is Hotel Dusk & Last Window.
I know Chase is coming in, but I'm gonna assume that those characters featured aren't truly Kyle Hyde and Rachel. If they are, I'm disappointed with the change.
Still interested in playing.
Anyway, Hotel Dusk, I feel, has been a game I've longed to play. Only a week ago I had a random urge to play it, with barely any sense of knowledge of gameplay nor the story. I bought the game for $10.
I finished it recently, and in a way, it parallels my life- too long to explain. And that I need to move on from my "hotel" very soon. I hold the game very close to my heart. I'm glad that I didn't play it earlier in my life- it wouldn't have made sense to me compared to what I've been through in recent years.
Though, I did find it kinda funny that some puzzles seem like they were taken from the backs of cereal boxes.
took a bit a peek at Last Window, specifically the intro and a bit of chapter one.
Man, he seems even more bitter in it. I really loved him in Dusk, but mannnn, the bitterness in him in this sequel from what i saw, ehhhhhhhh
w/e ordered the game already
can't wait.
dusk was so cozy, but i feel like im gonna get more of a "cold" city feel. well it's LA, so warmer
Finally got Last Window in my hands.
So far, the atmosphere is kinda less cozier, but w/e still very interested in playing it. And I'm not yet into the story, though I'm in the second chapter.
last window is a beautiful game
art and story wise
i loved it. i thought i'd like hotel dusk more, but now I love them both equally.
brb crying
it was a great experience
actually i did love the art in hotel dusk more tbh
better aesthetic for kyle hyde than the more modern, tidbit more manga version in last window. the profiles in dusk seem a bit prematurely designed, but loved it. i didn't like his animation compared to dusk. much more natural feeling in it.
margaret was pleasing to look at though, and seeing the behind the scenes was cool
two years ago some guy asked the ex-cing director about 3rd installmnent

i know it was two years ago, but man, im dying for a 3rd. and chase seems to be just a SPIRITUAL successor
did a little more digging and the same guy who asked that recently asked if the protag from chase was hyle hyde- and as i thought- it wasn't: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/979371-last-window-the-secret-of-cape-west/73423379
i mean, it was obvious. though shit can be reworked- who actually knows. but now i do.

Ace Attorney 6 has an official English title now: Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Spirit of Justice
In the US, it's coming out in September (no specific date), again exclusive to eShop
There's also an English version of the first trailer:

The Japanese demo for this game released yesterday. People found data in the demo files referencing the English release and discovered the English title early.
In Japan, the game is releasing in four weeks: June 9.
of fucking course it's eshop exclusive god i hate this
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, it's priced at US$30. So, at least, that's better than most retail ($40) 3DS releases.
Steins;Gate 0 is a kind-of-sequel (branched ending) to Steins;Gate that released in Japan last December.
Today it was announced that it will get an official English release, with physical copies for PS4/Vita, in 2016 for both America and Europe. Like the first game, this localization is handled by PQube.
http://gematsu.com/2016/05/steinsgate-0-coming-west-ps4-ps-vita-2016
Unlike Japan, this localized release won't include the PS3 version. Additionally, Japan is getting a PC port of the game on June 24, but the English launch doesn't include a PC version yet. No word on any special edition yet.
Yesterday, there was a leak from a few retailers in Spain that listed a release date of August 26 for the Spanish version from the same publisher. This official announcement doesn't specify a month.
There's an upcoming anime adaptation of this game, but no details or release window has been announced since last year when development was confirmed.
Also, there was a new Zero Escape gameplay video last week. ZTD is releasing on June 28, just over a month from now.
Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma released earlier this week.
The 3DS and Vita versions released on June 28 (Tuesday) in US, while the PC release was on June 30 (Thursday).
Amazon had complications with supplying the game, so the people who preordered the limited edition a year ago haven't received it yet.
I chose to buy elsewhere so that I wouldn't have to wait forever and probably get spoiled by the Internet. I just finished the game today. It's pretty good.
Yep. Still waiting on mine. But it's fine.
I can wait.

At Anime Expo, Aksys announced that localized title "Chase: Cold Case Investigations" will see a western release in Fall 2016.
Additionally, they announced that Zero Escape 999 will be ported soon to "other platforms", without clarifying which ones. About a month ago, Spike Chunsoft teased a Steam release, but this port will probably be to other platforms too. I'd say Vita and 3DS are pretty likely, but it could also be iOS or Android.
999 was already ported to ios I think.
But iirc they took out all puzzles, so it's just a straight visual novel.
Maybe they'll do a complete port.

This is probably my first time ever recommending a mobile game, but I quite like the Layton spinoff Mystery Room.
Rather than being about solving puzzles, it's about solving murders. It's a bit like Ace Attorney (albeit simplified) in that you find clues in the crime scene and it's filled with a lot of dialog between the main character (Lucy), the professor (Alfendi Layton), and the suspects of each case.
It doesn't really feel like a mobile game because it doesn't have any of the usual silliness that's rampant on this platform. They monetized it similarly to Capcom's Ace Attorney ports: the beginning of the game (2 cases) is free and once you finish those you can pay $5 to unlock the rest of the game (5 more cases). All of the cases are fairly short; it took me 9 hours to finish the whole game.
On another note, Level-5 announced a new proper Layton game about a week ago: Lady Layton: Millionaire Ariadone’s Conspiracy. Unlike previous Layton games, it's releasing on not only 3DS but also Android and iOS. Japan gets it Spring 2017, English-speakers get it later in 2017.
Danganronpa V3 got a new trailer at today's Sony conference
Japanese release date is in January 2017. US release plans TBA, but it will probably be mid-to-late 2017.
This trailer shows the character designs for all the students and new monokumas. The new protagonist is the blonde-haired girl with an ahoge, not the cyborg guy like people previously expected.

Capcom announed another Ace Attorney game today: Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2. It's the sequel to a game that came out last year which will never be localized, continuing the adventures of Wright's ancestor (Naruhodou Ryuunosuke) and Sherlock Holmes during the Victorian era.
All it got was a teaser trailer, which doesn't even confirm that 3DS is the platform getting this game. There's no actual gameplay footage yet.
http://gematsu.com/2016/09/great-ace-attorney-2-announced
Capcom announced that they're releasing Apollo Justice HD this winter (in the US) on both iOS and Android.
They've previously ported the original trilogy and Dual Destinies (Ace Attorney 5) to iOS, but this is the first time Ace Attorney will reach Android for people outside of Japan.
Also, Chase releases this Thursday.
Chase is a really short game, with just one case that lasts about 90 minutes, and it definitely seems like something that would be episodic although no sequels have been announced yet.
Just today, I played another short 3DS eShop game: Parascientific Escape, which is an escape-room game that's a lot like 999 (...even down to the premise and plot twists) but simpler. I liked it.
OMG! I FORGOT.
Will be downloading it right now...
Music definitely has a Hotel Dusk & Last Window touch to it- I mean I shouldn't be so surprised because it's the same guy- but I've been longing (not as long as other fans since I finished both like half a year ago) for this.
I truly want to savor this game no matter how short it is...
Edit: Also, is it just me or sometimes the dialogue goes to the next excerpt without pressing A? My N3DS may be a bit damaged so I'd like to hear some feedback...
http://gematsu.com/2016/10/zero-escape-nonary-games-announced-ps4-ps-vita
http://gematsu.com/2016/10/zero-escape-nonary-games-also-coming-pc
The first two Zero Escape games, 999 (originally on DS) and VLR (originally 3DS/Vita) are coming to a new remaster bundle on PS4, Vita, and Steam in Spring 2017 (in US). The bundle is called Zero Escape: The Nonary Games. It's getting a physical release too.
VLR is presumably just a port (or completely unchanged in the Vita bundle), but it may have minor not-yet-announced tweaks.
The new 999 remaster included in this bundle is heavily changed. Thanks to not being on DS anymore, the visuals are drastically improved in quality. They also added voice acting (in both Japanese and English) to 999, which until now was the only Zero Escape game without voices. There are UI changes too including the addition of a flow chart.
Considering Spike Chunsoft was listed by Nintendo as one of their third-party partners for Switch, I'd expect this to come to Switch too. There's no word yet on a PS4 port of Zero Time Dilemma (currently 3DS/Vita/PC). Once this is out, both Vita and PC will have all three Zero Escape games. 3DS kinda already does thanks to backwards compatibility, but this remaster probably won't reach it.
Since it's not on a dual-screen, I wonder how well they'll handle the
end of the game where you control Akane. With the dual-screen, it was really cool how they showed her on the bottom, and the puzzle on the top.
in any case, I'm sure its not a big deal, and I do want this pretty much only for the upgraded 999.

They'll probably take away that particular use of the dual-screen mechanic. You can't turn your TV upside-down.
They might put the bottom screen's narration at the top of the screen or something like that to separate it from the dialogue.
You can see some screenshots at the Gematsu articles I linked and some others on the Steam Store page for The Nonary Games, but they don't show anything about that.
