I spent a few days up on the coast of Lake Superior a few weeks ago. I got caught in the heaviest rainfall I’ve ever seen four miles into a five mile hike, almost fell off the face of a cliff and I was within feet of running down a black bear who decided to double back in the middle of the highway in front of me.
I also saw a grizzled old hitchhiker standing off of the road, miles and miles from anywhere, an hour after dusk. I saw him about a mile from the same spot the very next night.
I saw a little kid tossing an entire bag of baby carrots, one by one, into the belly of copper falls. Saw a little orange dot in the middle of lake superior, far far out. When I looked through the binoculars, I realized it was a guy paddling in a kayak. I wonder if he made it back to shore. Winds were ugly that day.
Got lost on a gravel logging road and found the worst “bar” in America. Heard something big growling behind my tent one night. Watched a hungover hippie in the campsite next to me yell at a group of little kids who were riding their bikes too loudly.
But, the weirdest thing I came across was in a used bookstore. Was rummaging through stuff when I saw a big, grey bus pull up outside. About a dozen Mennonite girls, probably in their late teens, piled into the little shop. Three of these girls found, and bought, ratty copies of Ken Kesey’s “Sometimes A Great Notion”.
Man, why that book, though? Why were there three copies of it in a used bookstore to begin with? Why were these Mennonite girls, all of them in full uniform, looking for this book? The three girls that bought copies of it went straight to the checkout after finding it. Didn’t linger or browse at all.
