for some reason or another, i vividly remember spending an entire week in fifth grade "preparing for the real world" in which we would be "adults who needed to know how to write cheques".
i have never written a cheque myself, don't have any and have only touched two since that time in sixth grade when mother dearest gave me one to put in my school lunch account.

as an american, are there things you remember learning solely for, say, the SAT?

the sat is a coastie thing. we took the act.
still remember being upset about my real score and crying. i remember that pre-act test we took in eighth grade saying i'd get between 34-36 on it. smh tbh fam
I didn't do that good on the act at all lol, only got like 27 I think
But hey at least it's still a higher percentile score. Someone in my grade managed to score a 13 on it.

Everything that was useless was really a metaphor for a valuable life lesson and thus was not useless.
