Title: REAL MATH HELP
Post by: ?????? on December 27, 2013, 12:42:56 AM
i'm creating a serum

classictyler is trying to create a 20 percent strength solution of salicyclic acid in a bottle that can hold 177 ml
his friend, hippo, has a concentrated formula of salicyclic acid 30 percent, the bottle only having 30 ml

their mutual, nihilistic friend, felt, thinks that hippo doesn't have enough concentrated salicylic acid to fill up classictyler's wish of having a 177 ml bottle with 20 percent strength

felt has a very, sleek airless pump that can hold 30 ml of solution

questions:
Is it possible to fullfill Classictyler's request with how much salicylic acid available from Hippo?
What's the ratio (acid to water) needed to make ClassicTyler's request, if possible?
What's the ratio needed to make Felt's back-up plan work?

This is just arithmetic. Why do you need help with this?

available = 0.3 * 30 mL = 9 mL (fully concentrated salicyclic acid)

when diluted to 20 percent concentration,
max volume = 9 mL / 0.2 = 45 mL

1. This question isn't clear. It says "in a bottle that can hold 177 mL". Do you need to fill the entire bottle? If so, no, you can only have up to 45 mL of 20 percent concentrated acid.

if you want 177 mL of 20 percent concentrated acid,
needed volume of 100-percent concentrated acid = 177 mL * 0.2 = 35.4 mL
needed volume of pre-diluted 30-percent solution = 35.4 mL / 0.3 = 118 mL
needed water for dilution = 177 mL - 118 mL = 59 mL

2. I don't know what exactly this question means, but the above numbers probably answer it. Even if your solution were fully-concentrated, that 30 mL bottle isn't enough.

if you have 60 mL of some acid solution and want to dilute it to fulfill the request,
minimum concentration needed = 35.4 mL / 60 mL = 0.59 = 59 percent

3. Again, I don't know what this question means, but that probably answers it.

why do you have a bottle of salicylic~

i have heredity keratosis pilaris and a terrible combination of oily and sensitive skin on my face

and i'm starting to develop palmar hyperkeratosis that i've confused with athlete's foot for a while
my mother had a moderate case of it but never did anything about it

also i made 6 bottles yesterday!! but only one with acids in it
my acid wash with 20* salicylic and 15* lactic with fruit acids works wonderfully  giggle;
