Title: I want to move but blerh
Post by: Daddy on July 28, 2013, 10:56:23 AM
So I started my new job in May and I felt so great about making over twice what I normallly did. Then my student loan repayments kicked in and I realized i'm dropping an extra $350 per month on loans.  I could technically pay less but I'm trying to get rid of one of the higher interest loans asap.

Then i have a slightly higher tax payment as well as my state mandated retirement fund (as a state employee I pay into this instead of social security) and required payments into medicare.

That isn't too bed as I'm still banking about $1300 more every month than I was.

But I want to move and not need a roommaate.  Rent and utilities and other expensive fuck me over and all of this extra income and some pretty much are all consumed. If I didn't have loans i'd probably be fine but currently I'd be cutting it so close in terms of disposable income.

I need extra money every month >.<

One bedroom apartment would be fine.

Studio isn't entirely desirable because I'd have guests seeing my bedroom.  akudood;

Also studios aren't much cheaper in this area because all the demand from fucking boston hipsters.

Plus i'd have to make my bed so much

It'd still be a single room apartment whether or not I did live with her.

And my concern with living with a girlfriend is any stability of a relationship. You can't really get an apartment with them and then expect combined finances, especially in a lease.

If you break up mid lease and can't afford it then you're screwed.  I'd rather be able to afford it 100percent and not worry about that.

thats why you have to keep them domestically subordinated to you so they dont even make their own money and are forced to stay with you

no better test of a relationship (Friends or Girlfriends) than moving in together though thumbup;

¿ ¿ ¿ i don't get why you can't just live with your girlfriend ? ? ?

i've been doing it for two years and we split the bills right down the middle

also we split tasks like cooking and cleaning and whatever so it's a nice division of labor and it's better than having a shitty roommate who eats all your food and makes a mess and leaves

and there's no worry of other people having noisy sex in your place

Read back where I've mentioned even though that is an option, I like the assurance of being able to afford it 100percent myself so I know I'm not in a difficult situation if we break up.

and a roommate is not an option for me for those exact reasons.
plus i want to control who be in my house.

is there any degree of uncertainty in your relationship lol

because if not then just do it

Yes.
uh lol. Technically she "broke up" with me last week but got all sad and said she wanted to stay with me.

I told her I'd have to think about what I want. I decided I want to break up but I'll give her a chance to stop behaving so terribly all the time (starting arguments over stupid shit on a daily basis).

we'll see how that turns out.

but regardless of relationship issues, giving my childhood issues of having to move every year/ every other year becuase of my stepdad I like the certainty and comfort of knowing I am the sole person responsible for where i live. relying on another for any reason removes that.

and yes i'm aware you can never be 100percent because employement isn't certain or having your leg blown off by the viet cong is an option.

I have no idea what prices are in your area, but my apartment is $500/month and has 2 bedrooms. They also cover the water bill. Gas and electric add about another $60 and internet is $17 so the total per month is $577.

You are making an extra $1300 so unless you plan on eating a whole steak every day, you should be fine if your prices are anywhere near mine. But, like I said, I don't know your area so I apologize for being ignorant.

You'd be lucky to find a government subsidized single bedroom in the shitty area of the ghetto for $500 around here.

Hell that is a part of my city (where people dont want to live) that most people dont wnat to live in and it's $850 for the cheapest)

http://boston.craigslist.org/search/aap/nos?query=marblehead+%7C+lynn+%7C+swampscott+%7C+salem&zoomToPosting=&srchType=A&minAsk=&maxAsk=800&bedrooms=

and there is everything under $800 on craigslist in my area.

The only things even close to under $600 are single room rentals (idiots can't list things properly)

A studio (which i wouldn't want) in the absolute worst area(even worse than the zillow link) area of the city. and i am pretty sure that's not a a legit (or at least truthful) post since i know there ain't any actual studios in that area.

The boston area is one of the most expensive areas in the country to live in.

Jesus christ, these prices are outrageous. Seems like you would need to make double what your extra pay is just to get by in a decent area. Unfortunately, it looks like you're stuck at the moment since you want to afford everything alone (which is smart btw, I admire that.) Get out of Boston.

I know you're not, but definitely don't do a studio. They seem like too much hassle for too little room. I am feeling like I struck gold with my apartment. We live in a very nice area too.
