Title: maRIO
Post by: ncba93ivyase on April 07, 2013, 12:17:21 AM
have you played any mario games lately

I just re-beat Sunshine today and it's about as good as I remember. My only real complaint is the overall bugginess. I can't count how many times I fell through walls or suddenly warped under the level after a shine appeared. And that camera, oh god. akudood;

I also beat the main story of Super Mario 3D Land which is infinitely better than I'd expected. It's what Galaxy should have been. I was satisfied with the main levels, but after beating the first run and seeing that the world number doubled I nearly shat myself. I guess my only complaint is that there isn't much freedom to explore and levels can be short, but there's a tremendous number of them so no big deal. thumbup;

Though it's been quite a while since I last played Sunshine, I don't remember falling through any walls

I actually like the Galaxy games

Because of not yet having a 3DS or Wii U, the last Mario platforming game I played was Galaxy 2.
Just before that, NSMB Wii, which I liked much better than the DS one. I've heard the Wii U one is better yet.

3D Land will be among the first 3DS games I get.

Isn't that the main reason you hate Galaxy?

I keep meaning to replay Sunshine. Like I'll be on the verge of actually really doing it and then I'll get sidetracked with something else. One of these days...

if you get an xl now and luigi's mansion or some pokemon game then you get 3d land free

Yes.

the difference is that 3d land is level-based and galaxy is world-based. it's to be expected that short levels don't have much freedom, but i hate how galaxy locks you into one path when 64 and sunshine let you grab shines out of order and while doing other missions.

my problem with sunshine is the crazy number of shines there are per level. plus some of them are just cruel and artificially difficult so it's like ugh

i really love galaxy 2 because of the number of levels but i'm currently at 90 stars and am struggling to find motivation to continue

3d land is a game with no challenge or anything remotely new or interesting gameplay-wise. it's a somewhat 3d version of an nsmb game. if galaxy had 3d land's degree of unvaried level design and nsmb-like problem of always making the player have a power-up, it wouldn't have gotten the accolades it did. whereas galaxy had problems of linearity, it always made sure the player was doing something new. the galaxy games actually brought something new to the table of 3d platforming with its gravity-based level design; 3d land has nothing but a bunch of samey levels and bland power-ups.

3d land's special levels are relatively difficult

while galaxy is visually interesting, it consists of nothing more than moving to the next point that launches you to another planet. it's more difficult than 3d land, but it feels like there's somehow less thought involved.

and just because it was constantly doing something "different" it didn't do anything well. it was a bunch of "hey you'll only experience this cool thing for 15 seconds and then it'll be gone forever and it'll never be interesting enough to revisit"

maybe it's because i like collectathons but i enjoy finding all the special coins

that's a big reason why i like the game

I kinda wanna play NSMBU, but I don't see the reason in buying a whole new console just for that.

 I got 3D Land I am really enjoying it. I got all of the Star coins and now that I have luigi I will be playing all the harder levels now and collect all the star coins as well. My only complaint is that they are way too generous with lives, I have about 140 lives making me more careless.

i think the last time i even touched a mario game is when i last finished a replay of yoshi's island, which would have been in...october? if yoshi counts. if not, then it would have been when i last replayed super mario world, with john, during the summer last year.

I really can't remember the last Mario game I played, but I've been meaning to re-play Super Mario 64 lately just for nostalgic value if for nothing else. It probably won't even be as great as I remember it to be.
