i agree with all of this, and i have a few additional and totally unrealistic hopes of my own

-backwards-compatibility with all previous home playstation games, both those in disc and those in digital format
-ps3 streaming service enables physical ps3 games to be recognized by ps4 and subsequently streamed to it
-at least the online features which are currently free remain so
-no drm more restrictive than what we currently see on the ps3, still allowed to play used games, no persistent online connection necessary, etc.
-reasonable price tag
-no wii u-emulation via vita gimmicks
-no increase in the msrp of new games
-no pseudokinect nonsense
-2014

what i actually expect:

-retains numbered ps4 name (perhaps with a subtitle???)
-backwards-compatible with ps1 discs, but not ps2 or ps3 discs at all, meaning all disc games will need to be repurchased
-loss of many currently free features of psn to ps+, only the most fundamental aspects of online play remain free to all such that the 'real' experience requires a ps+ subscription anyway
-no drastic restrictions on used games immediately, but gradually we will see more baby steps a la the online pass
-no drastic increases in drm in general, but eventually we'll see more and more games which require a persistent online connection, require an activation code, etc.
-$400 minimum price tag, likely closer to $500
-we will indeed see wii u-esque vita gimmicks which will quickly be forgotten about
-no major change in msrp of games
-updated pseye comparable to kinect, will hopefully flop in a similar manner
-2013

unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have flopped all that much.  microsoft gives out a bs 'shipped' number of 24 million, but i fear the total sold is not more than a few million off.

sales-wise it's been hugely successful for them, but in terms of content there's nothing but wannabe wii games

though i guess i'm hoping the for the pseudokinect to be more like the ps move in that in flopped both sales-wise and in terms of content but didn't seem to affect the flow of standard ps3 games goowan

well yeah, but i mean why is the memory card mandatory for many games when all games would have to save to the game card itself for that sort of trophy restriction to be possible

unless some game cards only save a 'used' checkmark to themselves while the rest of the save data goes to the memory card, in which case that seems like a huge and unnecessary waste

Move does the same thing, it's just so the camera can know who's who because apparently technology is so shitty there's no other way for the system to know

I will say that although the controller is uglier, it does look more ergonomic.

also how could sony possibly afford to stuff 8gb of gddr5 ram in this thing and sell it for under $600

or even under $1000
Title: Re: S-sony new console extravaganza
Post by: Hiro on February 20, 2013, 06:48:45 PM
8gb of ram is pretty cheap, phones these days have 2gb and this system has to last for 6-8 years
Title: Re: S-sony new console extravaganza
Post by: Hiro on February 20, 2013, 06:53:47 PM
So after letting is sink in for a little bit, I think the controller looks alright, the games do look pretty decent and not too bad for launch titles really. I'm sure it'll turn out to be a decent system, although it might take a couple years so pick up steam, like the PS3. I think this will start out cheaper though, and it will probably gain support a bit earlier than the PS3 did.
I'll get one, but probably only when the price drops, so like in 2015 I'm guessing

Yeah.  I thought even the iPhone 4 had Bluetooth 4.0??  And don't the more expensive PS3 headsets use newer versions of Bluetooth explaining the need for the USB dongle?

well that was pretty high-end graphics hardware in 2008, plus the graphics on consoles get optimized a ton compared to what they can do on a PC. I think the 360's graphics hardware is something like you'd find in a PC in 2003 or something along those lines.
Plus the RAM this time isn't being used just for the games. It'll be really helpful when streaming games, demos, sharing gameplay videos, keeping the system on standby mode, and just overall running a more fluid and integrated UI where you can jump between different things quickly.

I really don't see what they'll use the speaker for though

gddrx is used exclusively in graphics cards, though (hence the 'g'), so it's not like i can separate the cost of the ram from the cost of the rest of the card lol

(ddrx is the type ram you can find standalone)

sony specifically said they'd be using gddr5, meaning it has to be part of the gpu, which i guess the cpu will be able to borrow from when necessary

which would be an extremely expensive and unorthodox setup

the only 8gb gddr5 graphics card i can find:

http://www.amazon.com/nVidia-Computing-Processing-Module-Kepler/dp/B009ADXDSE/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1361432737&sr=1-3&keywords=gddr5

goowan

of course sony won't be using anything nearly that advanced but it won't be cheap for either consumers or sony no matter what
Title: Re: S-sony new console extravaganza
Post by: Kalahari Inkantation on February 21, 2013, 12:41:24 AM
WHICH LEADS ME RIGHT BACK TO THE INITIAL QUESTION: HOW THE HELL ARE THEY/WE PAYING FOR THIS

because between the ps4 hardware itself, the new controller, and the kinect kinect, the only way this could possibly be sold at $430/$530 is if they take yet another massive loss

maybe they plan to have this thing either make them or break them because if it flounders like the ps3 did they're goners goowan
Title: Re: S-sony new console extravaganza
Post by: Hiro on February 21, 2013, 12:54:29 AM
I really do feel like they went with more standardized technology to cut costs, and I really hope they learned they lesson from FIFE HUNDRED NINETY-NINE US DOLLARS, but my guess is that they will sell at pretty close to a loss if not a very minor one, and sell the system at $400 for 32GB model and $500 for 500GB or something along those lines.

Also my new opinion of the conference:
thumbup; - Games look decent enough, system overall seems solid, and in general they didn't fuck everything up
thumbdown; - Nothing in particular was very exciting or surprising, didn't show the system, """new""" logo is horrific
Overall - I definitely want one and look forward to seeing more of it, but I'm not particularly hyped.

Better pictures of the camera: http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2013/02/21/dualshock-4-revealed-pushing-the-boundaries-of-play/
Looks like each cube sections is either a camera or a mic, so 2 cameras and 4 microphones, and then that little nob on the right end to adjust the angle I guess.

also here you can get a better look at the bottom of it, where you can see two different ports:

i was about to agree with you tec but again i realized that of course it's not possible see as the system architecture is entirely different. the original quote says they would like to make them playable in some form though, probably meaning through streaming. hopefully that ends up being a real option.

i know it's not

that doesn't make it any more excusable

this is entirely sony's fault for not having the foresight to think that maybe this might be a possibility if the ps3 were to use such radically different architecture from anything else before it

but no, they were arrogant and stupid enough to think that the cell would be SUCH a successful piece of technology that everybody and their mothers would want to use it in their own game consoles and telephones and televisions and computers and refrigerators and toasters and there would never be any compatibility issues like this because the cell would ~redefine the standard~ and of course the ps4 would use the technology as well

obviously that didn't happen, the cell was a complete and utter failure, and sony's unwavering megalomania is 100% the reason the ps4 will be a woefully incomplete platform

honestly, i think that'd be a reasonable asking price for the ability to play ps3/ps2/ps1 games on the ps4 smithicide;

not that i'd at all be happy about having to pay for what was once a standard feature in home consoles, but it'd at least give consumers the option of deciding for themselves whether or not they care about backwards compatibility and their psn games instead of having the imbeciles managing sony decide for them

the average consumer doesn't know and could not possibly care less about the inner working of their consoles, all they'll see is that for some reason their upgraded playstation won't be compatible with older digital playstation software in a world where:

-upgrading one's phone comes with the expectation of being able to transfer all of their old apps over to the new one
-upgrading one's tablet [...]
-upgrading one's pc [...]
-upgrading one's wii [...]
-upgrading one's ds [...]
-upgrading one's playstation handheld, even [...]
-likely, upgrading one's xbox [...]

and so on

who would buy an iphone knowing that every new iteration of the device would require them to either repurchase or simply do without every single one of their old apps (unless they actually use the old phone, in which case why even buy a new one) because of supposed 'hardware incompatibility issues' that they could not be less concerned with

And yet for some reason, the PS4 is the only machine that couldn't meet such a basic expectation of modern entertainment devices. awdood;

-no drastic restrictions on used games immediately, but gradually we will see more baby steps a la the online pass
-no drastic increases in drm in general, but eventually we'll see more and more games which require a persistent online connection, require an activation code, etc.
-no major change in msrp of games

all confirmed

Does Apple really grant the expectation to transfer all apps across devices and keep purchases when a device is lost?
I might not be especially familiar with it, but with what I've used of iOS and iTunes, it seems set up in some confusing way that unreliably may or may not keep track of which items you have purchased in a record which may or may not be consistent across Apple servers and your computer and iDevice.

For PC, Microsoft seems to be trying to prevent exactly that with their own software: Office 2013 changed the licensing scheme such that you only can install your copy on one computer exactly one time and it won't work if you reinstall Windows on that computer or move to another machine. Plenty of other things have similar DRM.

Nintendo actually keeps track of Wii and DS(i) digital purchases now? I might not have a 3DS nor Wii U, but as far as I can tell, it doesn't seem to associate 7th gen purchases with any sort of account outside of redeeming Club Nintendo coins. Also, there's plenty of Wii save data which they prohibit moving or copying from the original device.

i should have looked at polygon earlier lol

why couldn't sony have just released screen shots of what the user interface looks like instead of just forcing them to try to describe it?  awdood; and why all this love for ''''real'''' names all of the sudden?

QuoteThe light bar on the controller will be illuminated in a color that represents which player's controller it is: blue for player 1, red for player 2, green for player 3 and pink for player 4 â€" like the X, circle, triangle and square face buttons.

eh, okay.  i guess sony's taking away the ability to play with seven players on one console cry;

QuoteAccording to Norden, few PS3 developers bothered to make use of the analog buttons. The DualShock 4's touchpad features a 1920x900 resolution, and it will click when you push it down.

ugh why does this worthless feature have to also have a button

Except for pink, those other colors match what I've seen in plenty of other games; they use yellow for P4.

Of course, the only games that come to mind for me are Nintendo ones, like SSB (which uses a slightly different order?), Mario Party, and Pokemon Stadium. Also, four swords uses purple instead of pink or yellow.

Why would sony order the buttons X, O, triangle, square? I thought O is more of a 'first' button in Japan than X.

There actually are games that implement more than four players?
Doesn't the DualShock 3 have a LED player indicator that's also limited to four?

The 7 limit is due to the bluetooth spec, which also is shared with accessories like headsets

People actually advertise the resolution of touchpads? The hand interfacing with any touchpad is too imprecise for touch measurement of significant precision to be of any use.
Maybe they intend people to use it similar to a PC trackpad, using the pushing functionality similarly to a mouse click.
I feel like this feature is consistent with their existing analogue stick click

maybe the led strip's first colour is region dependant?  the japanese playstation site just uses the same press images so it's hard to tell.

and yeah, but most of the games that use all seven bluetooth devices for controllers are mostly sports games.  and for the higher number players it lights up 1&4 for five and so on.

and yeah, the touch pad will probably be almost never used.
oh god i hope it's not used for navigating the console's main menu ugly;
i wish they'd fix this problem

and all they'd have to do to make it as painless a transition as possible for both japan and the west is switch the current positions of the x and o buttons (as opposed to forcing one over to the other's standard)

that wouldn't help any, because the japanese think of a circle as being a "confirm" kind of symbol, like a "yes" and x as a "no", while americans think of the x as selecting, like crosshairs, and a circle as nothing in particular. Plus for americans the button on the bottom is the main select button, while for japanese it's the first button on the right.

i know, and that's what i mean

if they were to place o in the position of x and x in the position of o, it would solve virtually all of those problems (o would no longer be the first button on the right, but that's not exactly the most difficult change to get accustomed to lol)

Nintendo leaves A on the right and it's always worked for them in all regions.

Sega's Dreamcast also placed A on the bottom and I don't think the intention for that was related to catering for American audiences.

well the only times nintendo has had a button layout where a would be on the left from what i can recall is the snes and DS, and in both cases neither button stands out to me although i do remember being confused on rare occasions as a kid on where A was vs B.

Only some of them.

There are others, like the one who owns that project diva game and has high scores on expert in almost every song.

When playing that game I also was confused over part of the controls: somebody described that game's star icon (which appears alongside X/O/square/triangle) to me as "Press on the joystick. It doesn't matter which one." and I assumed they meant L3/R3 but instead it needs to be pressed/slid forward (or probably any direction away from the center) rather than clicked down.

but what's surprising to me is that the jump this time around is so small, and in general the trend seems to be that it's just getting smaller and more expensive :(

i mean i know we're supposedly close to pressing upon the physical limits of moore's law, but that should still be somewhat far off and doesn't quite explain why we're paying so much more for so much less :'(

the original xbox launched at $300 and look at how it compared to the geforce 3

and now the titan is $1000, and the next set of consoles will be 1/3 as powerful as it is and yet still be around $500

only in terms of exponential improvement like the graph is using, really you're going from like 3 to 300 (or 6 to 450 maybe) from the xbox to 360
from 360/ps3 to ps4 you go from 300 (or 450 idk) up to roughly 2,000 i think.
the graph is confusing i don't even get how they can have exponential growth represented linearly like that, plus the space between them is 90, 900, 9000, but proportioned exponentially

directly comparing the price of desktop video cards and consoles isn't quite fair since consoles have a ton of other hardware which in particular increased a lot with 7th gen's semi-PCificiation (HDDs are the main new part that comes to mind)

is Titan even intended for gamers? I'd imagine that the most powerful video cards would be for computational-intensive research

If a more average PC is compared to current consoles, a comparison which I imagine matters more for developers, PC will always stagnate. The average PC is especially bad because, unfortunately for PC manufacturers, they haven't managed to convince consumers that they absolutely need to buy a new machine every few years ever since Windows Aero.
