why do people always make facebook statuses about stuff that has nothing to do with them?
for instance, this shooting that happened in Connecticut. yeah, it sucks and it's a horrible thing, but why make a facebook status? it's not like they know any of the people involved (and if they do, obviously that's not my point). all of a sudden everyone from drug dealers to bar sluts are religious nuts that "pray" for all these families that were affected, but for what reason? do they think God is watching and expects them to pray for these people? that could very well be true for some religious folk, but posting it on facebook to achieve some sort of gratification from making a public statement about it seems more like a plea for attention, not some actual genuine concern for these people.
I was thinking this exact same thing earlier... minus the emphasis on praying
And minus Sam/pinkeh because she actually lives there so it affects her more directly.
I started getting irritated at all the "<3 connecticut" posts

well yeah people that live in that community are different. i'm talking about people i know in atlanta that are posting about this :

Because when they post it on Facebook, whether they realize it or not, they're seeking attention for themselves. Because it's something big, current, and horrific they know a lot of likes/comments will probably be generated from their status.

I was gonna post something about this too but I was like WHERE'S THE SRS BZNESS BOARD?
Anyway yeah, I agree with all that stuff you said.
Also, a couple of my friends have used this as an excuse to tout their pro-gun-control beliefs, which I personally don't understand. But if they're the kinds of people who use something like this to bring up politics on facebook, they're probably not the kinds of people I'm going to understand anyway.
Because they're all vain
Good thing I made a status about how sad it was. 5thgrade;

It's because people like to make a difference even when they can't, that's why.
That sort of thing happened during the Benghazi attack, and what happened is a bunch of Libyans got on Facebook in a sort of group hug of Americans, and that is one thing that definitely made a difference in relations between people of two different countries.
Never underestimate the power of a group hug, even under the worst circumstances.

i didn't say it in those words, plus you didn't even see the post
i thought geno was interpreting it as: 'i made a status essentially saying, "it's sad, but shut up"'

Which is worse: people posting their sympathies on a networking site, or no one caring because it didn't affect them personally?

You can care without asking everyone to acknowledge what a kind and caring person you are
because it says "What's on your mind" in the status update box?

So you'd rather people cared, but didn't show their emotions publicly?

I'd rather it seem more like sincere emotion than as a method to garner attention. It's good to care. It's also good to donate to the poor. But if somebody has to make an announcement about how much they're donating and how much they care it loses some sincerity in my mind

Reasonable.
