Title: portable external hard drives
Post by: Samus Aran on July 20, 2012, 10:01:42 PM
So out of curiosity, anyone have any nice portable external HDs they'd recommend? I've kinda filled up my 250GB Seagate Expansion as well as my internal hard drive, and I reeeeally don't wanna delete stuff. I have to keep all this anime. I HAVE TO. Plus, it'd just be really nice to have another drive.

However, prices on Seagate Expansions have gone up, so I've been looking at other brands. I've seen some of interest, but there's always such conflicting reviews and stuff.

Anyone have a brand or model they'd particularly recommend? I definitely don't want one that runs loudly, btw. Preferably no noise at all. Whether it's USB 3.0 or 2.0 doesn't matter. Neither does the format because I'll just reformat it anyway.

I wish I had a computer that I could scrap a nice drive out of and put it in an enclosure, but alas, all I have available is the hard drive from my old Dell laptop, and it's a very shitty internal HD that only holds like...50GB or something. So no point in that.

I have a western digital hard drive that works pretty well. As far as I can tell a hard drive's a hard drive.

yeah, i guess that is mostly true, although read and write speeds are variable, as is size and whether or not it makes any noise while running (provided it's one that sleeps, which i actually would prefer it not to...i have mine running at all times)

I'd recommend this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136280 (WD scorpio black, $70) ..with an enclosure

$70 seems like quite a bit for only 350GB...there are already-enclosed portable external hds also from western digital that are like 1tb for only slightly more........

whoops I thought it was 500. here's the 500 version for $80 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136856

but I recommend it because
- it's small
and
- it's 7200rpm whereas most 2.5" drives included with 'external hd' packages are 5400rpm. smaller drive has also benefit of being quiet.
the difference in rpm will make almost a 38.5% difference in large anime file seek times
I only buy internal 3.5" drives, so I'm not really familiar with externals. My 1TB drive is currently full, but I've been just moving things to my boot drive's free space and waiting for further post-flood price drops before buying another, preferably 2TB, drive. Or maybe two so I can actually have backups.

In my experience, anime-viewing seek times are negligible for both my desktop (7200) and laptop (5400).

You could buy a cheap HDD of your choice and a "dock" for it.
