Title: I've (possibly) finished making a game
Post by: ncba93ivyase on June 20, 2012, 06:47:56 PM
So here are some old screenshots: http://ektomarch.com/games/

Basically, it's a Metroid-ish game about Nazis who end up in hell. It mostly focuses on huge boss battles with heaps of dialogue in between. Unlike what most people would want, I'm not going to fill it with baby-tier Nazi "jokes" like "HEIL HITELR XDDDDD". I'm trying to separate the characters from Nazi stereotypes and make them as lovable as possible.

also the captain is non-flamboyantly gay

But yeah, you basically wander around in hell and talk to a lot of demons and fight a lot of demons and explore and blow things up. Also, conspiracy theories and shit are tied into the plot.

also it's made in javascript and html

would anybody like to know anything more

would anybody like to make any suggestions

Also, there's a character in the game who's a lot like Hiro. He accidentally ending up looking like him and he has the same pitiful personality. srsly

Also, old gameplay video for those interested:

why is the captain gay
why is tyler gay
he's gay because i was one day joking about ideas for my game and i thought a gay nazi captain would be silly. i decided to actually make the captain gay and not have him fit any common gay stereotypes. he's a badass and nobody really knows his sexuality, but it does tie together the story at the end

and i don't mean it'll end with a gay sex scene

although that could become spinoff game
that's just one dimensional characters
then again in most media the nazis are the villainous horde so they wouldn't have much character development to begin with

it's also somehow something really dumb that most people find hilarious

kind of like how black characters dying first in action and horror movies was purely coincidental and it's since become a cliché that every single movie these days follows because it's "funny", when it really just ends up being dumb and predictable

Well Nazis did say Heil Hitler quite a bit... even in salutes. I mean to randomly shout it is one thing but to hear it really wouldn't have been uncommon. There is historical precedence. And it's not like picturing Nazis as violent and villainous is far off base if you believe in social equity. A gay Nazi could easily been seen as going for cheap laughs as well since it's XD SO RANDOM/IRONIC. Now a Khmer Rouge member searching for his glasses... There's a game

And a large number of high-ranking Nazis strongly opposed Hitler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_July_plot), so it's not exactly wrong to have a group of Nazis who don't worship him.

also, a large number of germans really didn't know how far the party went with their aryan bullshit. they mostly saw that the party was fixing the economy and built a powerful empire out of nothing. most americans wouldn't give a shit if we eliminated certain people if the unemployment rate went down and their pay went up.

His homosexuality is only indirectly stated at the end of the game. Before that there are only very subtle hints.

he's gay because gay nazis did exist and they were never open about it for obvious reasons. it's never used as the butt of a joke
Also, there are no playable masculine gay characters in games.
The completion date's been delayed a bit (again) because I went home for a few days.

However, I'm at a point where 2/3 of my work is testing and fixing stuff. It's basically done. wrench;

I'll try recording some videos sometime soon and maybe let some people play it before it's finished.

how much would it cost if you were to sell copies

$5 is the plan. The total map size is much larger than Super Metroid's and there's loads of content, so I feel like it's a reasonable price. What makes me sad is that I feel like most people won't even want to pay that much because it runs in a browser, even though great games like VVVVVV are less than half as long as my game and easily sell for the price just because they run on the desktop.

some characters, yes

if you want people to play it you should lower the price just a tad man
i don't think the browser thing will be a problem if they can download the whole thing and run it in their own browser window and whatnot.
i dunno

the people who wouldn't pay for it wouldn't care whether it's $5 or 99¢. those same people won't even buy great games like the binding of isaac just because it's made in flash akudood; the only price that'd probably guarantee more sales would be $1, but then profit margins are lower than with a $5 game and i'd have to sell five times as many games, which is unreasonable.

half of the people who want the game will buy it for $5 and the other half would buy it if it was $1. if i see that sales are shit in the first few weeks, then i'll lower the price to a dollar or two and see if it helps but i don't want to risk losing that much potential money too early.

Is there any way to play it outside of a browser? I would gladly pay the $5 for it if I could play it outside of my browser.
If you can find a way to execute HTML and Javascript outside of a browser, sure.

also, running in a browser doesn't mean you need an internet connection to play it.

I know that, I'd just like to be able to launch it from my desktop and have it run from its own independent window.
Copy a browser shortcut to your desktop, modify its icon and name as you see fit, and change its execution line (in properties) to something like (for chrome)
Code Select
C:\some\path\chrome.exe --app="http://some_web_address"

I believe Chrome's "app mode" simply launches a lone window for the specified web page, instead of adding a new tab to an existing window, and also removes the tab bar and other toolbars from the new window. I believe other browsers have a similar mode that uses a different command-line argument name.

What kind of general sound do the rest of the songs use? 8-bit? 16-bit? Synths?

I came up with a cool chord progression that might work for your game. I'll probably be making something of it anyway so why not?

I've pretty much deprecated a lot of the older music and I'm mostly going with slower, drone-ier music. With more "exciting" areas there's much more of a typical chiptune-ish sound, but while exploring there's droning/ambient with some bass and that's 90% of the game.

but i'll take in anything you make because i'm definitely not good at making music akudood;

There's a quick demo of what i have so far.

The final track will be more paced out, but those are all the parts I have in mind right now when they play together. There might be percussion too, but I kind of like it as it is now.

The attack on the chords needs to be more pronounced too so that'll be fixed too.

It sounds like it'd be good end credits music. The credits would only include my name and yours for doing the ending credits music. wrench;

Although my next project is going to be a futuristic scifi game and this would definitely be good, so I'll still use it.

one idea that would possibly work is to have them come in on opposite sides of the screen

so like, guy 1 and 2 are talking, and every time guy 1 talks, he comes in from the left and stays on the left, and every time guy 2 talks, he comes in from the right and stays on the right

it creates less movement but is still just as dynamic in its own way

i'm pretty sure this is used by a lot of rpgs that use character cut-outs in dialogue befuddlement
