Title: Wii U controller
Post by: Hiro on May 20, 2012, 04:01:51 PM
Let's discuss this shitty mockup I made and how much better it would be
high-res multitouch display obviously

Oh Hiro. The actual model looks better than yours sadly (imo). I don't like those fangs at the bottom.  :(

are you saying you'd prefer a tablet over a gamecube controller ghouldood;
it's not like my design's supposed to be flat and fucking huge, i think you're imagining the wii u controller with a gamecube button pad and some oblong horn shapes tacked onto the bottom
it's more like a gamecube controller with a phone screen in the middle

Don't get me wrong. The GCN controller was the most comfortable ever. But your model looks more uncomfortable than the actual controller itself.

I don't think you're understanding how much smaller this is.

Title: Re: Wii U controller

the entire point of the design is it would fit in your hands like a 360 or gamecube controller would goonish

1.2 inches is quite a bit bigger in this case, 5 is really as large as it can be before passing into a different category of sizing.

aside from the sheer size of the controller itself nothing about strikes me as terribly wrong

the real issue is that you're limited to one controller per console, which completely undermines the whole concept imo awdood;
that and the fact that as far as we know it'll be underpowered compared to the competing consoles which puts them in exactly the same position the wii was in
still not enough >.<

and another issue is that the limited power of the console itself is what limits the number of controllers that can be attached, so it becomes an issue of controllers vs. grffx unless they make it so powerful that that's not an issue, but they've already claimed that it's just '1.5x as powerful' as current consoles and they probably aren't going to change that awdood;

from what i remember they were working making that possible but as of the last time any hardware's been shown it could only support one

the button placement seemed fine enough to me
also i don't think any pre-release people have ever said any controller is very uncomfortable
in fact i hear the ps3 boomarang was pretty nice to hold

i think that was just a rough estimate because they didn't even really have any of the internal hardware finalized

I think an octagon guide around a joystick is rather useful because it helps with going straight in one of the primary directions

But I guess most cases where that would be particularly useful are probably better served by using the d-pad instead. The Wii U controller does make the d-pad more easily accessible than the Gamecube and Wii controllers do.

Using the d-pad instead of the joystick essentially completely changes your controller, with losing two buttons, making two more awkward to use, and making the IR camera unusable, practically reverting to an NES controller which is in some ways actually less comfortable to use. This is not at all comparable to PS/Xbox/3DS/WiiU where your left thumb can easily (in the middle of gameplay) switch between analogue stick and d-pad for movement with your right hand remaining over the face buttons.

I'd say that counts as weird placement n_u

The N64 controller also had quite a bit of weirdness for switching between joystick and d-pad from moving the entire left hand (with resulting problems of balance/symmetry and silly appearance), but at least it uses the same face buttons for both and the d-pad itself is decent unlike the ones on gamecube/360

Quote from: Thyme on May 21, 2012, 09:37:55 AM
but not as weird as the c-stick >.<
What was so weird about the c-stick? I think it was better than Gamecube's d-pad and was generally used much more in games.

pro controller RUB IT

well, at least it's an actual controller, but i think it's kind of silly to keep both analog sticks at the top. considering the shape and general layout is already almost completely the same as the 360's controller, i don't think anyone would have complained any more if they had just also copied the location of the analog sticks.

then again i don't know the size of the controller, so maybe both sticks at the top won't be a problem when you're actually holding it, but for now i think it's a weird choice. i guess they just wanted to be consistent with the main controller's analog stick locations.

i'm just nitpicking though goowan

pretty much this.  you know after the flurry of launch titles that use the gimmicky tablet thing that most 'serious' games will move to the pro controller/older wii remote

srs, i'd imagine that only the first-party titles would make serious use of the """gamepad""" and that kind of undermines the entire gimmick lol
of course, nintendo consoles are only ever purchased for nintendo titles

so
http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/14/nintendos-iwata-says-wii-us-second-screen-was-nearly-scrapped/
Quote"almost gave up on the idea of the additional screen" during its final discussions about the console, adding that "this was due to our concern over the expected high cost, it may not have been feasible to create this and sell it at a reasonable price point for the consumers."

so, does this mean that nintendo is going to launch it at $400 and then slash the price a few months later punishing the people who buy it at launch?   giggle;
