Post by: strongbad on April 15, 2012, 10:21:20 AM
I bought radiohead's kid a on vinyl on a whim yesterday and now I am very obligated to get a record player to listen to it with (something i've wanted to do for a while)
does anybody on boyah have some insight? suggestions for inexpensive yet good models? looking for something that i can hook up to my existing stereo

i'm doing research and stuff on my own but i'm curious if anybody on boyah has some suggestions

How much are you looking to spend?

The dual 1000/2000 series are pretty solid and are usually cheaper.
Here's 'un for a little over $100.

If you have a thrift store around you, nine times out of ten you'll be able to find a super cheap table. I might start there first.

any old pos will do, just put a new needle cartridge in it

Stantons and Numarks are cheap and reliable for DJing, but if you just want to listen to records than yea check a thrift store. Getting a new needle and cartridge will cost bout $50-100 but is worth it for a good sound. Shure makes good needles and also ortofon.

You will need a receiver or a mixer to plug the RCA inputs into.
Craigslist is actually a really good resource for tables.

it works, you are going to need some own speakers

it is a radio, cd, tape and "phono" record palyer. you can also hook it up to your television for 90s era surround sound.

yeah no kidding
apparently this is standard in record players (according to my room mate), but i am fascinated how it automatically moves the needle onto the record, and then off again when it is finished

man i really want to get into being an audiophile even more.
this player + sennheiser hd595 + kid a is so fucking cool
just need a better amp now

to be an audiophile: buy original pressing, buy gold cables, buy expensive  unneeded amplifiers, and speakers beyond your needs and Never, my God, touch the eq.
