Title: construction project tonight
Post by: applesauce on March 12, 2012, 08:17:42 AM
I believe that last night we stumbled on some strange multi-level diversion tunnel complex.

Basically we found outselves under a bridge, on a large concrete pad with about a dozen manholes, a T.A.R.P dropshaft, and an outfall nearby. Only one of the manholes was popable. We dropped down into a typical Chicago CSO near tarp shafts-- 5' RCP out to an oufall and one of those bigass floodgates. However, on the other side of the floodgate was a large box tunnel, perhaps 13'x13', with the bottom about 15' below the bottom of the floodgate room. Directly across from us was a 5' brick sewer also dropping in. What was really interesting though was that both the box tunnel and the brick sewer were bone dry even though it was raining lightly outside, and when we were down there we could hear roaring water in the distance. We think there is likely a diversion from a larger sewer, possibly in the 8'-11' range that drops in about a half-block east of the junction we were at and runs to the deep tunnel shaft that was presumably jusssst out of our view from above the tunnel. Maybe there's even a connection with an interceptor? Anyways, tonight we're hauling lumber down there and building a 15' sewer ladder inside the tunnel and lowering it down. I'm fucking pumped.

what if the water is diverted while you are in there?

Huh? There's nothing automated about it if that's what you're thinking. The system is all set up with gravity. If the interceptor is overwhelmed it goes up and over, and then down into the T.A.R.P. system. If the tarp system is overwhelmed it goes up and over and pushes on the floodgates until there is enough water pressure to lift it. It's pretty good for a cso system.
