It looks like, eventually, G+ will have "Hangouts on Air" with:
After 10 participants, others can continue joining as "spectators" with no video/voice.
Ability to view the hangout without joining (for whatever reason you may want to)
Ability to save hangouts to YouTube (ew)

The details of this aren't too clear, yet it's apparently been available to most celebrities and others with a very large number of followers since December and planned to eventually reach all users.

Separately, there's also a system of collaborative apps in hangouts being worked on with both google stuff like docs and a sketchpad as well as third-party apps
