I remember when people were buying them for like $20 each and talking about what a wise investment it was on HN, and now they're worth less than pennies.

well, you're partially right, but 1 BTC has been holding steady at around $4 for the past few months. a year ago the average value was pennies. what happened, as far as I can tell, was a huge bubble may-july due to spontaneous press coverage (I remember reading an article about bitcoin in Newsweek right before the bubble burst). mtGox and other exhanges aren't really volatile enough to make good money right now, but I made something like $80 a couple months ago (in liberty reserve currency lol) trading while rates were falling.
What is 'real' money? You're implying something not arbitrary, and well, those notions don't exist anymore. This does not mean that everything is valuable, on the contrary, it's imaginary.
1000000 luts = 1 dollar.
Ufortunately, due to bank fees we must charge a $5 fee per conversion and bulk conversions (of 5 million or more luts) are an extra 1 cent per ten thousand luts.

real money is anything you can give to some average person and they'll be willing to accept it and give you something of value in return
soda isn't money because not everybody wants a soda
bitcoins aren't real money because nobody knows what they are
us dollars are money because people want and use it
