Beach shorts, as any other occasion and you are not a serious man if you wear those and even on the beach you are pushing the social accepted bounds toward accepting your eccentric self.
I would just call those swim trunks but i saw swim suit and bathing suit other times for other things
WATER SHORTS

I do not think swimming is as trivial a persuit as those shorts imply and are made for. They're more for being an obnoxious nobody who sits in the sand all day with a teeshirt and avistors on under an umbrella's shade trying their best to salvage their lives. I realize half of Boyah may be offended but maybe it needs to be.
swim suit
bathing suit
swim trunks
Any of those. And what's the deal with board shorts?
I'm embarrassed by the word I think of when I see them so I call them something else before the word comes out of my mouth. akudood;
swim trunks or swim shorts
swimming trunks ifeelbetter;
I usually say 'bathing suit'
Jams, trunks, and swim suit are also all in my vocabulary

COME ON AND SLAM AND WELCOME TO THE JAM
Usually bathing suit, occasionally any of the others except "swim pants" which I've never heard before in my life.
I call those specifically swim trunks but as a whole I call that type of garment a swim suit.
I call the ones without the mesh lining swim shorts and I call the ones you posted board shorts akudood;
I think I tend to call them swim trunks, though I hear bathing suit more often
Is this a regional thing? confuseddood;
Do you people even consider the words that you use to describe and designate things?

As if they're limited to the beach!

That is the most appropriate term.

Surely this would be ridiculous to someone in Nebraska

If they choose to wear such ridiculous things for swimming in Nebraska which is even more ridiculous then everything is deserved and proper.
Bathing suits in general are ridiculous or do you merely mean the design on the example confuseddood;
That is not a bathing suit, it is a pair of summer fun shorts marketed for the beach and water themed things involving generic people or a certain social sect. A swim suit, or a bathing suit, would be this:

I am ok with that. It does have a 50s suburban privilege and good vibrations feel.

Ah, okay so long as you are consistent hocuspocus;
i basically just call all swimwear "swimsuits" in order to avoid confusion
