Title: One thing I took for granted
Post by: LCK on December 01, 2011, 03:58:04 PM
as a child, i came from a small middle-of-nowhere town with a population less than the amount of members of this forum. i always wanted something better than this place, always wanted to go somewhere bigger and better.
but i now know one thing i really took for granted as a child was that i could see the sky without any obstruction of light
as i sit outside smoking a bowl in my backyard right now, i can barely pick out 3 stars from the sky, there are so many lights around. this is terrible. how can i not be allowed to experience this natural wonder that is the sky while i am enjoying such a fine plant from the earth itself?
as a child there was nary a night where i could not see the sky. there were no obstructions.
but now as a live in a slightly larger area. college town of ~30,000, even this town emits a terrible amount of light pollution to be seen from miles and miles. i can only imagine how terrible it is in a real city
granted, lights of a city are beautiful, it is such a shame to be less exposed to the elegant sky

Yep, summer at home has become magical to me... I'm used to a cold dark starless sky here in Madison, but at home at night it will be a pleasant 70 degrees with the stars littering the sky, constellations galore. With the fire going, a beer in hand, and a blunt going around the table it is really nice n_n

It is wonderful, for a while it seems as though the night will never end and you will just always be there beneath the stars with your friends, talking about whatever issues come to mind.

I would love to share this feeling with you cuddledoods;

It's one of the very few things I detest about LA... you can see about 4 stars on the clearest nights. I've forgotten that there is even a night sky.  saddood;

LA goes on and on. From a plane all you can see is lights except where the ocean starts. There is no escape from it.   saddood;

Your area would rate very high on a dark scale of the sky. Which I conveniently have here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bortle_Dark-Sky_Scale), and which there was a show about, revealing the places on earth that fit every single possible condition. In my search, I bring you this amazing program, and I produce here this video of tribute. It is very interesting.

At first I thought you meant the number of active members and I was like "get outta here."
