this is a new thing guys. todays topic is:
halibut
tasty when beer battered happydood;
I went halibut fishing on the Pacific outside of San Francisco once. I didn't catch a single one, unfortunately. I had much better luck the previous year when salmon fishing, again outside of San Francisco. I caught a huge salmon, a couple little flatfish of some sort, and a pretty good size leopard shark. When I went halibut fishing, all I managed was some dinky cod.
For the Halibut

once while halibut fishing I caught a giant (like 6' across) skate, which I guess is a ray. another time I saw a guy pull a 200lb halibut into the boat after shooting its face with a sawed-off shotgun (not joking, this was in alaska).
river fishing, as you'd probably agree, is superior to deep sea 5thgrade;

I guess I would agree, yeah. While it is awesome to catch all these sorts of things you'd never see anywhere but the ocean, it is a GIANT pain to get out there in the first place. There's the payment for the charter boat, the 2 hour-long drive to actually get far enough out (though it was only like 50 minutes when I went for salmon), the possible seasickness if it's your first time in a small boat on the ocean, all the people to have to fish around, the more expensive and more worrisome rods and reels...
It was pretty awesome that first trip, though. Aside from catching fish, I got to see a few blue whales out in the wild. That was badass.
River/lake fishing though? Much easier time in every way, and you're probably more likely to catch something you can actually eat. Or that wouldn't be a pain to prepare, at the very least.
I do detest ice fishing though.
