Title: Are your parents or other family members aware of your religious (dis)beliefs?
Post by: Boyager on August 07, 2011, 08:25:54 AM
My entire immediate family (and as far as I know, my entire family in general) is Christian and I have been raised as such.  I've never actually believed in it, but I've spent my entire life pretending that I do.

My problem now is that I'd like to stop pretending because I simply can't stand it anymore; my family still treats me as if I'm religious when the reality is I'm not.  I can't stand having to tell a blatant lie when asked if I "say my prayers"; I absolutely hate going to church because it forces me to present myself as religious and lie to all the churchgoers, but I've continued to lie through my teeth because I don't wish to cause any controversy, nor do I wish to devastate anyone.  I'd love for it to end, but I simply don't have the heart to tell my parents the truth, and even if I did, I'm not sure it'd make a difference. :'(

My immediate family was never really religious, although I was raised to Roman Catholic. They know I don't really believe, along with my brother, too. They don't care. Religion was never something important.
As for my extended family, no. My father's side is pretty religious. I have an aunt and she is a bible thumper along with some in her family. My mother's side doesn't even discuss religion at all. I personally think they don't really believe either. I don't see them caring, though.

I think they choose to ignore the fact that I am not a christian, but I have told them.

My mom attempted to raise me to be Christian, though I don't think she genuinely believes any of it.
She knows I'm atheist and doesn't care. My sister, who actually does believe in Christianity, also knows I'm atheist and doesn't care

My sister once told me that her church asked the kids if they have any atheist family members and that, when she mentioned me, they tried to give her silly reasons to supposedly convince me that a god must exist with something about miracles being too unlikely to be coincidences
Thankfully, she could tell that it's nonsense and has no interest in attempting to shove Christianity on me 5thgrade;

i can't see my parents ever getting "sick of the bullshit" because they really do seem to actually believe it and i don't think they've ever hinted otherwise

someone kill me

my mom isn't even christian but she believes in god and doesn't seem to care what i personally believe, or at least never expressed any particular desire for what she'd have me believe

my dad once tried to convert me i guess but that was just once and he wasn't real pushy about it

so i'd say my parents are p. lenient too

"I should probably say that this is one of the last weeks I'll be able to do this."

"What, go to church?  Then it's also one of the last weeks you'll be living here."

She didn't even give me a chance to explain myself; all I was going to say was that it would interfere with school. awdood;

Because I'll be dorming at school. goowan

though i would like to go home for the weekends, but if i'm forced into church then i'll only visit occasionally
The real issue isn't that it'd interfere with school, but I don't think my parents could handle the real issue, which is that I am not religious. goowan

that's why i'd rather use the admittedly weak "school" excuse :'(
what else could i do :'(

i mean the best thing to do would be to tell them but they would essentially disown me smithicide;

I'd be no more than a stranger living in their house. saddood;

well, i don't hate my family and would actually enjoy seeing them a couple days a week

the only issue is i hate pretending to be religious which going home on sundays would force me to do goowan

Yes, I objected to my mother's fundamentalist preaching at a young age. She knows not to bring up 'christ's armor' and the war between jesus/satan with me.
