Title: HOW
Post by: applesauce on July 08, 2011, 09:39:57 PM
So, I turned on the AC unit in my living room just now, and as I did so, my roomate's desktop across the room (same circuit, different outlets) turned itself on. It was entirely off, not sleeping.

HOW, BOYAH, HOW.

Also the computer is on a power strip and a UPS.

So today during the storm, this happened again.

I was thinking about it and I realized what it was. The UPS has a diagnostics/control feed hooked up to his computer that can safely shut down when the battery is dying, records voltages and loads over time, and sends event information. I think that the UPS probably switched to battery power (both from the voltage drop with the AC startup and from brief power interruptions in the storm) and told it to turn on due to some bug in the UPS diagnostic software.

Something like that.  doodthing;
