Title: infuriating internet trends
Post by: Kalahari Inkantation on July 01, 2011, 05:15:56 PM
Is it wrong that I would not hesitate to bludgeon those who pathetically beg for recognition via "Thumbs up if _____________ !!" and other equally worthless comments to death? 5thgrade;

what's even more maddening is the fact that often many other idiots actually 'thumb' such comments 'up' (http://boyah.net/forums/Smileys/default/83055661vs5.png)
which internet trends do you detest n_n
Most GIFs are goddamned stupid but they've been around too long to really be anything but a permanent staple of the Interbutt

Goddamned rage comix

Facebook getting its nasty tentacles all over everything

Social media in general eating the Internet

Top 10 lists becoming the dominant form of edutainment

what's just as bad as the "thumbs up if" comments on youtube is the little fuckers who think they're real clever by pointing out the amount of dislikes with some clever video-related quip

like if it's a video of some dude making a real hard jump with a skateboard or some shit idk someone in the top comments will be like "51 people tried this stunt and broke a rib" because of the 51 dislikes

jesus christ this trend is on nearly every goddamn video

Every video game-related video on Youtube has a Call of Duty basher praising whatever terrible game happens to be the subject of the video using Call of Duty as a representation of all things wrong with the industry today.  It's absolutely annoying and I don't even care for CoD at all. goonish

It's especially bad because they'll all end up buying MW3 anyway and it'll likely go on to beat the other games in the series as the fastest-selling game of all time. goowan

anything reddit related sucks (BESIDES TEST ALLIANCE)
their comics are not funny and are just meme faces and something stupid, especially the girlfriend stories where its something completely normal and for some reason they feel the need to tell everyone about it with no punchline or anything.
and they take and copy things from everywhere and make it worse.

Also, people saying internet things in public and youtube comments like stated already

I've always loved them as a fun band (and they were fairly innovative and influential in pop/alt rock) but never called them the epitome of music or even the best of their genre, I'm sure. the mars volta I'm sure I did though lol

also what does my taste years before vulpix even met me have to do with her?

well, yes, of course she can. she is able to see exactly why Brand New is shitty teen music  doodthing;

Brand New is one of those bands that's not even really in a genre. You wouldn't compare it to other music that's commonly known to be good, just other shitty teen music (like HMMM is brand new or say anything better?? how do you decide, they're both equally uninspired and meaningless)... I mean even Weezer crosses the threshold defining 'real' music, Brand New is plainly far below

But Religion is still going, so if it is a trend, it's a really big one. So when will it end?

Probably never. At best, it'll just stop being centered around imaginary friends and magick.

How long as this "trend" been going, and when you think it'll end?
I'm not sure. I've noticed it a lot within the last few years. But I haven't been looking for it or actively taking notice of it. And it's just been within the last decade or so that the internet has become so interconnected amongst basically everybody with electricity on the planet. So it couldn't have been all that long ago.

Who knows. It's been going pretty strong in one form or another for thousands of years. Even now most of population claims some from of religion. And that was just another way to think about or perceive it. It may not be correct at all.

So if Religion is not a trend, how might your answer prove that fact?

Great, so when will that "trend" end? All the Internet provides is another way to bash Religion.

While bashing religion has been around a lot longer, to go in deeper about the "trend" I was speaking of is that on the internet bashing religion has become one of the "cool" things to do. You want to look cool on internet, you bash religion and you bash the followers of religion. (and also just make fun of and ridicule people in general no matter who they are or what follow or don't follow) And again, who knows when or if that will end. Though I would say it's pretty safe to assume it won't ever end unless the whole planet gets decimated or close to it. And even then that would only be temporary.

Another thought that may be sort of unrelated but, there's just practically no respect on the internet, or decency among a lot people who use the internet.

Switching gears here, cars haven't been around for very long (in relation to Human History), but a lot of people use them. Does that make them a trend? And how about some invention that people decide is cool?

Also, the Bible isn't an online trend as it isn't limited to the internet. Amish people use the Bible.

what does the bible have to do with religion

it's pretty startling (but not surprising) that the conversation went this far off-topic just because of the tangent allowed by loosely defining "internet trend"

I was gonna ask what that had to do with faggots, but it looks like my post was tampered with.

Edit: oh, it's a word filter akudood;

No, cars and some new invention. Out of the two, which would you say is a trend

Oh I was just talking about the word filters. But I wouldn't say cars themselves are a trend, but certain ones are and having certain ones is trendy.

Before people bought them to be trendy, they bought them because they're useful. If a lot of people bought cars for that purpose, does that make it a trend?

I wouldn't guess so, but I really don't know. Maybe it does, or maybe it did way back when.

You don't know anything about Utility and Usefulness? Cars are just an example. How about the iPhone, for example. Is that a trend?

I don't really know nor have put any thought into what makes a trend, or what is a trend, or what trends are going on now. (Not consciously anyway.)

But yeah, the iPhone I feel was kind of a trend or novelty. Though I guess when it first came out it was a one of a kind thing. I'm not sure what else was out back then that was like it. Though I do think that there were other phones that could do most of what the iPhone could do. But I wasn't really paying attention. And nowadays there's tons of that stuff.

So in your opinion, how is Bitcoin an internet trend? It's not exactly mainstream yet (not even on the Internet, apparently), and the idea behind Bitcoin isn't to make "a cool new currency for teh lulz".
Title: Re: infuriating internet trends
Post by: don't let's on July 02, 2011, 05:05:20 PM
I don't even know what bitcoins are or really understand how they work. Like how you get them or whatever. How they get produced and all that. That other thread may have been the first time I've even heard about them. But it does seem like I might have heard the word before at least.

That's all the proof I need to establish that Bitcoins aren't really an internet trend. If you have any questions not resolved by searching Google, feel free to ask.

You and other users involved in this thread (and those to intend to be) are just as liable for letting this thread get derailed as we are. Nobody was stopping other posters from posting in this thread at the same time we were. Nobody was forcing other users to read our discussion (which could have just as easily been about a real internet trend).
