Title: What were some of your silly childhood phobias?
Post by: [REDACTED] on June 09, 2011, 05:12:23 AM
For some reason, I was scared of the voiceover announcer (Bill St. James) used on HBO, Showtime, Nick at Nite and The Movie Channel, especially when they would use him to read the ratings bumpers outloud. Here is his easily recognizable voice:

It's hard to believe Showtime still uses him today.

I totally only had 6 seconds to get out of the basement after turning off the lights or I would die.

At Chuck E. Cheese, I was afraid of Pasquale in the giant animatronic band. None of the giant singing animals scared me, just the giant singing Italian guy.

Also if I lay down and stare at the sky with nothing else in my view, I have this very strong feeling like I'm going to fall into the sky and there's nothing I can do about it. Still happens. I try to avoid it.

This is not so much a fear as an awareness and uncomforting fact. Open doors and unshut windows greatly trouble me. The mere presence of a door behind me unsettles my nerves and disturbs my peace. It must be closed. It has to be secured, but above all, it must not allow unseen eyes to look upon me without notice, from within the darkness of the void, in the inner chamber of an unlit room. Who knows what lurks there behind the shadows of the wall. I must be sound within my space, and know all the portals into this world are closed, and the keys tucked somewhere safe. In the mind and heart and spirit of the soul.

I must look and see no doors unused, stand wide open into the hall, or gently sway at some unsure breeze. The mystery will drive me to insanity, and I will close them fast or else not rest at all. Even then I am so very weary. But with less cause and reason to turns horrors into a fancy story. Only the half pulse guard within the lull, when the floors creak and the ears whisper, a snap from some unseen brink. I am right, I know this much. There are enemies behind each knob and flight. What other purpose does an open gateway serve, unattended and out of sight? But to attract visitors and tricks, strange guests, blind and salient amid the noise.

In the kitchen where I sit and eat, there is a window before my face, covered with the curtains deep, and overlooks the garden and the night street. Behind me is the cursed door, leading to the room below, always left ajar and dim, with feeble light enough to illuminate the spot upon which I have my seat. What agony, what torment this arrangements suffers me, when I am lit more brightly than a Christmas tree. More stiff and fixed, for whatever shall one day sneak up  behind me suddenly.

We dine and chat among the chaos, pass the bread says the old man, I answer yes but have you seen the door upon my back? He utters that it is delicious, I agree in wild astonishment, that he has not yet noticed that fucking door behind me still! So with the frenzy of a horrid fiend, I rise and shut the damned thing, to looks and questions that put fear to sleep.

Peace at last, comfort that I may keep. Locked inside the chamber of my own design, with no entrance and no escape.

i have this vague memory of being about 3 and being terrified of this certain stuffed Mickey Mouse i had...only at night, though. during the day, it was one of my favorite stuffed animals, but at night, as it sat on its shelf and the moonlight casted odd shadows on it, it became absolutely terrifying.

I used to be deathly afraid of dogs and deep water.

On a semi-related note, I also used to be incredibly shy as a kid. (Fear of social interaction?)

My closet door had to be shut all the way or else I couldn't sleep.  Also everytime I went in my room at night I had to check under the bed and inside the closet again.

When I'm home alone I still check behind the shower curtain before I use the bathroom. :(

Also when I was little, in bed at night I had to have all my body parts covered by the sheet (as if the sheet provided any sort of protection anyway)

I thought it was a scientifically proven fact that they can't 'get' you if every part of your body is perfectly tucked in. :'(

I do that too, even when I'm not home alone ;-;
But I still like to have my closet and bathroom doors closed, it's just strange when they're open
