I found this in a trash processing room in an abandoned candy factory. Should I call the family? Would you want to know that your dog had starved/frozen to death several years ago in an abandoned building, or would you prefer to never know what happened?

Nope. Left it to continue to surprise people when they first come upon it.
I wouldn't call, they've likely moved on by now

Let's hope the owners didn't abandon the dog there
