Title: How does Boyah feel about Dubstep?
Post by: strongbad on March 17, 2011, 07:38:24 PM
I like it a lot.
Even artists like Skrillex and Datsik who seem to be pretty introductory are pretty cool

But I guess I'm also jumping on the bandwagen of college kids who like dubstep so there isn't much I can do.

Also I want Methree to post because I remember him being really into electronic music.

In what kind of context is this music usually played? Like, setting-wise?

WOBWOBWOBWOBWOBWOBWOBWOB

okay now that this is out of the way

I do like the more low-key,less WOBWOBWOB ambient kind of Dubstep. It's good for homework~

ITT I prove that I go to /mu/:

another example which I'll admit kind of overlaps with trip-hop:

Burial is pretty cool, but brostep is pretty shitty. It's all extremely dull, uncreative, generic, blah blah etc. Anyone can just take the "WUBWUBWUBWUB WUB WUB", "WUWUWUWU WUUUUUB" and those weird grinding laser sounds, put them in any combination on their computer, and boom, dubstep.
I don't find them particularly good for parties either.

However, I did lol when I realized that Skrillex song you posted samples Nintendo 64 Kid.

I'm more of a fan of the 'Bass Heavy' (for preference) but I like to think I have a good range of "Dub Step". Just an example of what I mean by 'Bass Heavy' (I have no clue what the exact sub categories are):

I can't find an example of the ones that I don't care for (cause I didn't care to remember the name) but I will point it out if it gets posted or if I come across one randomly.

See, that example was good dubstep.
Stuff like that is nice, but the brostep that most people seem to like right now is just not any good.

You have a very small view of dubstep. You should see the difference in the people who you are describing and the people who go to dubstep shows and raves (usually have dubstep DJs). The rave scene in general is huge, as is the electronic music scene, and from my (limited) experience going to raves and dubstep shows, I can tell you that there are very few bros there.

I like it. But only in social settings. Being a cannabis user and having the majority of people I associate with also be users I hear it all the time, I've got one who only listens to dubstep. I rarely listen to it by myself though. And I kind of think you're a fag if you exclusively listen to dubstep.

I know "true DubHeads" get all up in arms about Mt. Eden (along with Rusko and whoever else) comparing them to the Flo Rider of Dub Step, but that is the song that made me actually venture into the genre to pick some stuff up for myself.

Now, though, that particular song doesn't do much for me (so I can see where the "true dubheads" are coming from a little), but it opened the doors  for me personally SocksDood;

Before that, the only way I would listen to it (and like it) would be buzzed/drunk/high/faded in the backseat of a car cruising the Tempe nightlife on the way to the next party :P But I randomly heard that Sierra Leone from a Red Dead youtube vid and then just started seeing there was other things other than some of the "bad shit" that would be played sober.

And since we're on the subject of "The Flo Rider of the Genre"

For added "affect", simultaneously play with this (http://www.rainymood.com/). (read from a youtube comment when originally saw the video).

i never said only bros like dubstep, I said the bro-style of dubstep is becoming very popular and is generally not very good. there are other types that are good as I also said, such as Burial and the example skylark gave.
skrillex is bearable but not really my thing.

Really, I think they're a fag just because they listen to only one specific genre of music, which happens to be dubstep. Gotta have some variety to what you listen to, or it just gets boring.

Also, tell me what you guys think of this dubstep. (Unfortunately, you need real speakers to hear the bass in this video.)

I felt like I liked dubstep a bit before it hit America with its retarded popularity (not trying to be indie here), I can't stand 'crunchy party dubstep' like Skrillex and Bassnectar, even Rusko + Caspa (the most respectable of that subgenre) are a bit grating to me.

there's some great electronic dub step music though... I liked Zomby (Where Were U in '92?), Scuba (Triangulation), 2562, Burial (classic), Boxcutter, and some more instrumental hip-hop/beats things like Shigeto, Flying Lotus (obviously)... British grime/dancehall (which directly preceded dubstep) has some good artists too

At this point I know I only amassed a huge dubstep collection because I was on coke and x constantly, now I listen to very little of it and appreciate classic Jamaican dub reggae (King Tubby, Scientist, Prince Jammy, the grandfathers of dubstep and first to 'mix' dub) much more
