The only thing I dislike about the 17" is that its high resolution screen means smaller text.

The 17" has a longer battery life though, and I could make the hard drive faster for only $50 more.
Definitely the second one.
I'd go for the second one since in my opinion 17" notebooks are a bit unwieldy.
If I was going to get a MBP I'd get the 13" one for maximum portability and replace the hard drive with a 120gb SSD
