Title: I think possibly
Post by: russell on February 03, 2009, 07:20:01 PM
a childhood of sitting at my desk on the internets with music playing in the background constantly has made me function better when there is music in the background

I feel this way because I've noticed that in public places or just anything I'm doing I feel more comfortable when there's music of any sort in the background somewhere

does anyone else feel like this

Yeah, I find that to be true most of the time... but if the music is really loud, I feel like people can't hear me, so I get uncomfortable

Not really. Music usually clouds my mind.

Definitely. I work much better with music playing. It keeps me focused.

It depends. Sometimes it calms me down, other times it distracts me.

Depends on what I do. For reading, I prefer it on. For writing, I prefer it off. hocuspocus;

Same here, I'm playing A Clockwork Orange in the back right now. My iTunes is fucked up so it's my "music" for now.

This, definitely. I can't read or write while I'm listening to music, but I can do most other sorts of work...and if I'm not doing any work I usually still need background music of some kind to keep me sane.

usually this

Some baroque or classical can make dull criminal justice reports easier to do, but it's a distraction when I'm doing anything else.

If I'm doing something while listening to music, I can remember exactly what I was doing when I listen to that same song. It's like association, really. Certain stimuli from the music stimulate your brain in the same way every time, so it brings back the same memories that are associated with those stimuli.

I usually have music on when doing stuff. If I want to concentrate, I'll listen to purely instrumental stuff, mostly ambient. Vocals would distract me when trying to read or write. If I concentrate on the song, I'll be more likely to read the words of the song than those on the page, or write the lyrics out because that's what I'm thinking. If I concentrate on reading or writing, then I'll pretty much block out the music. Instrumental music doesn't do this to me though, so I listen to it.

Music does this to me too. I almost always listen to music when high, occasionally I'll have a very impressionable and interesting revelation, idea, or feeling when under the influence. Hearing the song in which such an experience emerged helps me recall and reflect on that particular event.

I function better at parties when there is music on.

Or maybe that's just the liquor.

I feel much better when there is music on than when there isn't, no matter what the situation. But I am not one of those people that listen to music for concentration. I can't. I always end up forgetting about what I'm doing and just focusing all my attention on the music.
