I use both spellings. I never realized there was a spelling variation of "grey" until now.

Whether you call him German or not is subjective to your own preference. He was a German citizen but he was Austrian by birth.
Personally I consider birthplace to be more important than later citizenship in making that decision, especially since someone can have as many different citizenships throughout their lives as they want, but birthplaces don't change.
There should really be a written rule for this.
