I got three decrepit Sheaffer fountain pens on eBay, of unknown origin, and cleaned them up. They're the kind where the nib (pointy writing part) stabs into a cartridge full of ink, not the dip-in-ink-pot type thing.
They write REAL GOOD. I'd gotten used to using 25c Bic pens I find on the floors of classrooms, and using those is a chore compared to a real pen. Even fancy fine-point ball points aren't as good. I guess you just can't beat the old stylus and ink thing.
So I'd recommend fountain pens to anyone interested in improving their calligraphic pleasure. If you're left-handed be sure not to get one with a slanted nib, because they're made for righties.
is the writing fat? or thin like a ball-point?

in between, these particular ones write a bit like the point of a fine-point sharpie or marker. feels like a pen though, not a market.
also there's lots of different types of nibs
i use pencils n_u

i wish i could do math in pen n_u
i do both pen and pencil but neither is perfect for me
pencil smudges with the way i carry around my notebooks, but pen means i waste a lot more real estate crossing things out and i don't like the feel as much (the best ballpoint pen i ever used which i loved so much went dry after a couple weeks and i've yet to find one as good as that ;_;)

what they do with their writing utensils behind closed doors is none of our business baddood;
I once saw an ad for a special pen pack that said.
"Can you do this with your favorite fountain pen...?"
Then it cut to a man throwing a pen into a dart board and then stabbing a soda can with it. I said "Bitch I could do that with a BiC you fluggin rip off artist!!!" madood;
what the damn is a fountain pen.

I use pencils because I do everything wrong the first time. Everything. Always. It's really kind of annoying.

I usually write in pen because it just feels better. I won't use a pencil unless it's a test or something and I have ho choice. Unfortunately, it means there's a lot of ugly scratched-out mistakes in my notes and work. doodella;
