It's a competition for Latin students like myself. I don't know much about it or what the layout is, but my Latin teacher wants me to participate because I'm good at Latin. :3
Discuss this and other similar things you guys have done. powerofone;
Don't let your teacher do this to you, my chemistry teacher did something similar to me when school started and now I'm stuck. :'(
I read an article about the number of students taking Latin is increasing. I thought of you

I've done stuff like this in the past and I've really enjoyed it, plus doing this can get me scholarships apparently. So I'm in. :3

Derivatives and a better understanding of the English language.
Basic understanding of all the Romance languages.
Helps you in grammar, a lot, having to learn the different parts of speech.
Higher SAT scores.
Helps with the fields of math and science.
It's helped me a lot in physics already, with not even a full semester of it.

I took 3 years of mandatory Latin and it did nothing to help my grades in French or Science. I don't believe that a correlation between Latin and higher SAT scores, because for the most part only schools with a high enough standard of education already would offer such an option.
It is wonderful and fun, grants all sorts of opportunities for reading about history and interpreting monuments, and is elegant and poetic. But there is little more educational benefit than any other difficult mental exercise.

It's helping me a lot with science and stuff. O_0
But alright.
I'm in my 5th year of Latin and really enjoying it. It's a lot harder than most languages, but a lot of fun.
Never heard of aforementioned competition, though I do participate in the National Latin Exam every year.

Awesome. Most people in my class are struggling. Half my class is failing. doodthing;
I'm taking the National Latin Exam this year. Considering I have a 101% or something insane and always get 100%'s on tests that my teacher says are hard, maybe I'll get an award or something. :3

I 2 38s and a 39 on the NLEs. There was one person in our class 9th grade year who didn't get a gold medal.
We were intense. baddood;
Wow. I've never gotten a medal, just three magna cum laudes.

What's the order of awards and stuff?
cum laude, magna cum laude, maxima cum laude, suma cum laude. Upper 50% of students who take the exam get cum laude, and it narrows down to the top 3% or so for suma.

Oh, so is suma the gold medal or whatever?
Yeah, you get a nice fancy gold medal for that, and a silver one for maxima. Certificates only for the others.

I hope I do well. >.<
Is it mostly grammar or is it a lot of culture shit?
I kick ass at grammar and vocab and shit, but suck at anything culture-related.
It's a pretty good mix actually. As far as I remmber there were a lot of both, and some of the grammar questions were in the context of culture/history, so knowledge of both helps.
I'm really good with the culture/history aspect, mediocre with grammar.

Alright. Yeah, if anything's gonna kill me, it's going to be the culture.
Kills me on every test each time.
I need to get studying.
Good luck with that!
I take German and we don't have anything like this. But my class is the best German class in the district (so says PBA) but this isn't saying much as there is only one other school that has a German program...

Only in Latin I this year.
I get Latin II and Spanish II next year.
So, in my junior year, I'll get Latin III and Latin IV, which is equal to the first AP Latin. My senior year I'll take Latin V, or the second AP Latin.

Yes, ma'am. I got an award for being the best Spanish student last year, including a pin I get to wear at my graduation.
And now I'm doing insane in Latin.
Math, science, and languages are my three best areas in school.

How are proficient of a spanish speaker are you? I would really love to learn how to speak Spanish.
oh, I'm terrible with math and most sciences! But I found biology very interesting... I like languages and literature and history!

I took Spanish I, but apparently I was at more like a Spanish II level. O_0
And, yeah, I loooooove biology. Especially the cell and molecular part of it.
And that's cool, I love English too, and some parts of history. I forgot about my love for English because I've had terrible teachers for the past 3 years or so.

I more like the ecology parts! and the things having to do with genes, I found that very interesting and reasons why things happen the way they do!
I have the most amazing english teacher! and she doesn't mind so much with grammar which makes me happy because neither do I (though it is more important to her than it is to me) and we write poetry and read a lot of it and she's so excited about it all, it's wonderful
I'm honestly surprised you haven't learned fluent Finnish yet.

I get this. And a special... too tired to think of the proper name, but since I'm in Spanish National Honor Society, I get the other things you wear around your neck that's not a medal... And a different colored tassel.
Also taking the National Spanish Exam soon.

I wonder if there's a Latin National Honor Society or something.
So, guys, I had my certamen yesterday. :3
It was six Latin I teams. Our team came in second overall. It was only some other kid named Mark and myself. The rest of the teams had four people each. O_0
We got a trophy and my Latin teacher's putting it on display. <3
