For English I need to read any book of my choice, as long as it has a good amount of maturity and intellectual merit.
Something by John Steinbeck.
Harry Potter
White Oleander
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
I Am America And So Can You.

I really like Ayn Rand, but reading The Fountainhead for a paper I did in high school nearly killed me... It's just so long, and having a time limit diminished its enjoyability a bit.
Do
Catch 22 Selkie

I read it during the summer for school and I didn't enjoy writing on it but I really loved the book. I think it portrays it's message (and it's a very good one, too!) in such a great way. It doesn't try to push it down your throat but isn't so subtle that it might be lost in the text.
Also, I love Roark.
anything by Dostoevsky; something by Lovecraft if you like gothicy 1920's fantasy; Thomas Pynchon if you want to be mindfucked but also read amazing fiction; or good ol' Dick for easy and good sci-fi.

I think you missed the part about maturity and intellectual merit.

The Stranger if you want something short, easy, but awesome.
About a guy who gets sent to prison and finally death about a murder because of the way he reacted to things, mainly his mother's passing.

I second this recommendation. It is very good.
