Cancer finally got the best of Ricky Wright. He died earlier today and there's already quite a few articles about it online. Wikipedia's article on him has already been updated with a confirmation of his death.
For those of you who don't know him at all or just don't know him by name, he's one of the founding members of Pink Floyd, and was most famous as its primary keyboardist. And while he didn't contribute as much as, say, Roger Waters, he was also a rather important songwriter for the band and even did lead and backing vocals from time to time.
This definitely rules out any chance for a true reunion performance like Pink Floyd did in 2005. He will be missed. :(
Also, I put this in arts because he's a musician, but if you really think it needs to be in The Lobby, go for it I guess.
First Syd, now Rick. Pretty sad.
This sucks. Rick was a really great and distinctive keyboardist. I shed a solitary tear while listening to "Any Colour You Like".
I moved the thread to The Lobby because Steal seems to have not seen it, plus I have a feeling Reefer would burst in sometime tonight and post a thread about it here in The Lobby without checking the arts board.
He will be missed.
I hope the other PF members don't hit the bucket soon.

Yeah, no kidding. I really need to see David Gilmour live before he dies.

I really wish I had been able to see them together for the last time.
Damnit, that sucks. I was hoping for another reunion after the passing of Syd Barrett. But with out Rick, it wont be the same. R.I.P.
We played "Wish You Were Here" in guitar class today in tribute to him.
i told kaz this ;-;

You must lead such a dull life.

I think its existance is important, but the memorization of names in the industry is pretty unimportant, I'd agree.

When you're a big fan of a band and its music, memorizing names and stuff like that is second nature. You don't try to memorize, you just remember.
It doesn't matter if its important. What is important, however, to Pink Floyd fans all over, is that one of the people who made that beautiful music that we love has passed, and we have a lot to thank him for.
I don't understand why so many people have to over-generalize and just assume that people who are passionate about Wright's music are crybabies just because they feel a loss for in losing him.

How do you memorize band members names by listening to their music? Unless they put their own names into the lyrics, I don't see how you'd pick that up.
And I don't see anyone callin anyone a crybaby

When you care enough about music, you talk about it to other people. You read up on it from time to time out of curiosity. You look at the information other than the song names on the CDs.
Unless you have no natural curiosity about your music whatsoever, I don't see how you could not find out something about the people who made it.
It's not necessary to know, but it's not a bad thing. And saying that bothering to learn about what you're listening to is stupid...is, well stupid. You're pretty dumb to give people the idea that they should just listen to it and be done with it.
Believe it or not, some people actually care about what they consume.
I don't listen to much Pink Floyld, but I know who he is, that's sad. :(
I assume Kaz losing this guy would be like me losing Ottis Williams. :(
so touching

I'm dumb? All I said was that it's not important. Do you even know what importance is? Because I don't think trivial facts constitute a part of that definition. You take so many things out of context, it's unbelievable.
Believe it or not, not everyone feels the need to be a stuck up prick to prove that they like something.

I never said it was important either. I said it wasn't necessary, but it wasn't a bad thing, so discouraging it is even more pointless.
The only thing I took out of context was your connotation of "hey kids just listen to the music," which is fine and all, but discouraging getting more in-depth is not fine.
And nobody is being a stuck-up prick, but okay. If you'd like to show me otherwise, then go ahead.

Well, it turns out that I read something you said incorrectly. Or maybe I read it correctly at first and forgot what it said along the way.
You said that "memorizing the names" (which i'm using as an example of knowing more about your music) is "unimportant." For some reason or another I had thought you said it's "stupid." So that's misunderstanding on my part. Oh well.
And to further my problems, "you're pretty dumb" is a typo. Supposed to be "you'd be pretty dumb," as in..."you'd be pretty dumb to give people the idea they should just listen to music and be done with it."
I never really meant to come off as a "prick."

Not a typo in the sense I just accidentally hit the wrong keys, just that I accidentally used an entirely incorrect phrase in the midst of trying to figure out how to put what I was thinking.
Needless to say thare are times when everyone accidentally says something they didn't mean. Apparently I just did it again in choosing to call it a "typo."

Yep... I've actually been hearing a lot of people use typo outside its definition lately, so it's not surprising. I guess it's picking up somewhat of a slang definition as well
