I only use an away message if I'm only planning on being AFK for 30 minutes or less. If it's more than half an hour I just sign off. I hate when people stay on for weeks at a time and just use an away message.
Only when I'm going to be back in a reasonable amount of time.
Never use them, even when not at my computer
I'm don't IM that much
I only use them to keep people from bothering but may still wish to talk to one person. If I know I'm going to be gone for more than 5 minutes, I turn my computer off.
I hardly ever use them. I'll just usually either sign off or leave it on but give no away message.

I never do.

i've seen you use them nigh everyday

Yeah, it did it automatically. I got fed up with it and finally got around to disabling it yesterday though.

Double tapping a key while rapidly typing.
I did while typing this post but I fixed it to avoid the irony of the situation.
Only when I'll be gone for under 10 minutes. Otherwise, I sign off.
I never set them myself, they'll only appear when my IM client automatically does it.

I sometimes see a message on the screen when I get home from school from a boyager asking why I'm online when I should be at school befuddlement
The messages should read "why the hell do you leave your computer on you pompous dick thinking you're better than the environment"

Or you could turn it off and use no energy.
I have not "Shut Down" my computer in a week, I always put it in sleep mode.
