How do you turn the white background into transparent and what file should it be saved as?

isn't that just transparent but looks white

maybe you should go through your preference panels but gimp won't work on leopard so idkkkk [:

And save everything as PNG unless it's an animation.

I'm using GIMP.  doodthing; and it says that it can't save as .gif unless it's animated or grayscale....

Multiple layers in gif=multiple frames.

Each layer=one frame
