Title: Fucking awesome.
Post by: Snorkel on January 26, 2008, 10:44:28 PM
Just picked this up yesterday from the shop. My good friend Garth put a good week or two of restoration into it, and for $385 this is the result:

For the unaware, this is a c-melody sax. It's like between alto and tenor as far as pitch ranges go, but it's keyed to C instead of Eb or Bb. This one is pure beauty.

I'm sure the sound is even more delicious, however I don't have a mouthpiece for it right now and my tenor mouthpieces are at school.  edumacate;

Eh, I've thought about it, but I haven't and probably won't for a few reasons... I don't like how the straight ones look at all, the curved ones are expensive and hard to find, they're too small for comfort, and I'm just not really a fan of that weird half-clarinet, half-sax high register. I'd go lower (bari, bass sax) before higher, but for the moment I'm quite happy in the tenor-alto range.

It's music. Doesn't sound take precedence over appearance?

Even better idea. Get a bari.

Wow, I am impressed. I have a Yamaha YAS-475. Not the best, I know, but it does get the job done. I actually was jamming with my cousin today so it was pretty cool. He has a Bari from school.

Yamahas aren't awful... I rented a Yamaha alto once upon a time; it was a great sax, but I prefer a different sort of sound.

If you're looking to upgrade, and the sax isn't in horrible condition, I would recommend trying to sell it for as much as you can (about $1000 I think) and getting an Antigua Winds sax. They seem like another one of the stupid "student sax" companies that sell bad music stores bad instruments, but they actually have really, really good saxes at affordable retail prices... and even better if you can find them online somewhere.

Saxophones are all personal preference, though -- if you don't like the sound and feel of an instrument, then it's not good for you, no matter how highly acclaimed it is. This is why my $1200 Antigua tenor is worth more to me than a $7500 Selmer Mark VI or something.

I wasn't saying it was awful, I like it a lot though. My personal preference actually. I also play clarinet, I have a Buffet R-13 Clarinet and I love the way it sounds.
